Chapter 12: The Hunter

Matthew Knight's PoV

Mason asks me what I wanted to tell them. I go sit down on the couch and Mason follows me. He pulls his sweater off and shirt when the temperature starts getting warmer. He has a six pack? I never noticed that before. I kind of have a six pack but it's not too noticable. Because I never really work out other then gym class. Mason smirks and tells me "I can tell your checking me out. You know you also have a six pack."
I look at him confused. He tells me "It's a blessing and a curse about being a werewolf."
Zoe sits down on a chair and and tells me "Take your shirt off. Or are you afraid I'll see you half dressed?"
I hesitate before I pull my shirt off. I'm surprised when I see I have a six pack. How did that happen? Morgan walks down and tells me "I like your six pack."
She sits down on the couch next to Mason. I'm about to start talking when we hear knocking on a door. Mason gets up and walks towards the noise. He opens the basement door and someone comes out and falls to the ground. I look and see it's a naked girl. Morgan rushes over and wraps a blanket around her. I stand up and see she has short blond hair. Mason and Morgan help her stand up. She tells them "I'm not...gonna be here...very long..."
She looks at me and she's surprised. She asks "Who is he?"
Mason tells her "He's the newbie. He's one of us now."
She looks at me and tells me "I'm Crystal. Sorry. This isn't...the best way to...introduce myself. Wrapped in a blanket."
I ask her "Are you alright?"
She tells me "Yeah...other then I have stitches on my stomach."
Mason tells her "You got shot by a hunter. Matthew put stitches in you. He saved you."
She looks at me and says "thanks."
I nod my head and she looks at Mason. She tells him "in Liam's office.... there's..."
She falls down on the ground and starts shaking. Mason asks "There's what?"
"His desk drawer....third drawer down on the right...side....a letter....for you...."
Before she can say anything else she changes into a gray wolf. She looks around and Zoe quickly opens the basement door. Mason shoves her back into the basement and Zoe closes the door. After she's inside we hear scratching on the door. It's very violent scratching. Eventually the scratching stops and we hear the wolf walk down the steps. Mason stands up and walks down the hallway. Morgan tells us "We should baracade the door. It should keep them from breaking the door down."
We all agree and we move one of the couches over. We put it against the door. Then we head back to the living area and sit down. Zoe asks "What do you want to tell us?"
I'm about to answer when I see Mason walk towards us seeming half out of it. He sits down by Morgan and she asks "What's wrong?"
He responds "The letter. She wrote it to me."
"What's in it? Or is it too personal?"
"She says she likes me. She was just too scared to admit it. She told Liam one day when I wasn't at the house. He told her to write her feelings down. That way I could find the letter and read it or she could tell me to read it. Or she eventually tells me herself."
Morgan smiles and tells him "When she's back you can take her on a date."
He nods. Zoe asks "So are you gonna keep talking about your feelings or can we hear what Matthew wants to tell us?"
They all look at me waiting for me to start speaking. I tell them "The hunters name is Robert Miller. He likes hunting. When I distracted him so you could help the pack get to safety he talked to me. He likes hunting. He hates the private property. He claims the property for being the reason he can't finish killing the wolves. It's his job to go from one town to the next to kill them. To make the woods safer to expand the small towns. He hates the wolves and loves hunting them. He enjoys it. He also threatened me, telling me to stay away from his daughter."
Zoe asks "Is Elizabeth Miller his daughter?"
I nod. She tells me "That's ironic. You have a crush on her and she does on you. He told you to stay away from her. But I can tell he's curious about you. And probably hates you for distracting him from killing one of the wolves."
Mason asks "Is there anything else? Or is it just about the hunter we already know?"
I tell them "The first day Elizabeth went to school I was the student that showed her around. We talked a lot. She's very interested in wolves. Not like her father is. She loves wild animals and nature. Wolves fascinate her. She likes taking pictures of them. I can tell she doesn't want to hurt any of you. She doesn't want her father hunting the wolves. But she thinks hunting is his hobby, not his job. But from her father talking to me I know it's his job. That's why they always move. They stay until he kills most or all of the wolves then they move to the next place. That's why she can't really make any friends. They move way too much. That's why she's interested in photography and art. It gives her something to do instead of being bored and lonely."
Mason tells me "We could use her. Not in a bad way. She can't know about us werewolves but we can find out what her father knows through her. Are you still friends with her?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Invite her to do something."
"Like what?"
"I don't know. You're the social butterfly."
"To be honest I'm not really a social butterfly on purpose. I talk and get super friendly when I'm stressed."
Mason asks "What are you stressed about? You live in a good sized house. Your parents make a lot of money."
"My parents are rarely home. It makes being home harder. I like being able to talk with my parents. I wish they would be home to ask me how my day was. My mom's a doctor. One of the only doctor's in this small town. My dad..."
They all look at me, waiting for me to tell them. I sigh and ask them "Have you heard of Tech Advances?"
They all nod there heads. I tell them "My dad is the owner of the company. He created it. He's there boss."
There mouths all drop open. Zoe says "I chose the wrong person to bite."
I tell them "My parents have us living in a small town so I can grow up without being followed by paparazzi. No one knows my dad is famous. If they were then they would only be my friends to be popular. He wants me to take over running his company. That's why he's barely ever home."
Mason asks me "Do you want to take over the business?"
"No I don't."
"Why don't you tell him that?"
"If I did he wouldn't listen."
"Why don't you at least try?"
"You don't know my dad. I do. That's...why I don't really date girls or if I do, it's nothing too serious. I know my dad wants me to one day take over his company. That probably includes me marrying a daughter from his business partner as well. I don't really get to choose."
Mason tells me "You should date whoever you want. Stand up for what you want."
Zoe tells me "Ask Elizabeth out on a date. It won't hurt."
Mason asks "Who is that?"
I tell him "She's the daughter of the hunter."
"Maybe we should start with hanging out. Ask her to do something like we told you earlier."
"Like what?"
"I don't know. Ask what she's doing right now."
I pull my phone out and ask 'what are you doing right now?'
'taking pictures in the woods. Why?'
'wanna hang? I'm free now.'
'sure. If you want to meet me in the woods.'
I look up at them and tell them "She's in the woods right now taking pictures. Can someone drive me there? Or can I borrow a car?"
Mason tells me "I can drive you over. Does she care if I tag along?"
"I don't think so. I'll ask."
I text her back asking 'is it ok if a friend tags along?'
'sure.'
'he likes photography.'
'cool. I can talk about photography with someone new. 😜'
'oh so that's how it is now?'
'yep!'
We start walking towards the door when Morgan asks "Don't you want to put your shirts on first?"
I grab my shirt and put it on. Mason says "be right back. I'm gonna go change."
He comes back a couple minutes later wearing shorts, sneakers, short sleeved shirt, and holding his camera. He walks over and grabs his car keys then we head outside and get into the car. He asks "So what should I know about her?"
"She loves photography and art. She's also suspicious of wolves. But I don't think she would tell her dad anything."
We sit in awkward silence for a while until I ask him "What kind of camera do you have?"
"It's a older camera. It's been a while since I've taken pictures."
"How long?"
"A year, maybe longer."
We pull into the parking lot and I tell him "Since the pack is in the basement for now you should all take turns working at the bookstore and coffee store. It will make her dad less suspicious."
"You're right. I forgot about the store."
We get out and I check my phone. She texted me 'I went back onto the path so you can find me. 😜'
'that helps. 🙂'
We walk down the path and eventually I can see Elizabeth. I yell "Elizabeth!"
She jumps, surprised to hear me then starts heading over to me and Mason.
