Dr Knight's PoV
I'm working at the hospital. It's a pretty slow day. Just minor injures and sicknesses. I should be home with Matthew and my husband but the staff was short of a doctor so I decided to come in and work. I'm walking around doing rounds, checking on our patients who have been here for a while or just got checked in, making sure the nurses are watching over them. I'm about to head back to our rest area when a nurse rushes over to me and says "We have a badly injured man. He's bleeding, gasping for breathe, and throwing up blood."
I quickly follow the nurse to a hospital room. I see Zoe standing in the room near the man on the bed. I give the nurses in here orders to help him breathe then ask "Zoe? What are you doing here?"
She's my next door neighbor so I know her and her family. She tells me "This is Mason. He's a friend of mine. I was over at his house when I found him like this. I rushed him over here."
I look at the wound and tell them "This looks like a bullet wound."
Zoe tells me "It is. He got the bullet out on his own. I don't know where it ended up. I rushed him over here when I found him."
"How did he get shot?"
I'm checking over the wound while talking with her. She tells me "He was walking around his private property. There's hunters in the woods. I think they mistook him for a wolf and shot him."
I look and tell them we need a antidote for this poison."
I write the poison number on a paper and a nurse rushes to go get it. I tell Zoe "The bullet is poisonous. The hunters warned us about the type of bullets they are using so we can help save people if they accidentally shoot anyone. Don't worry, he's going to be alright. He just needs to stay here so we can watch over him. He also needs surgery to fix the wound."
Zoe has a weird look on her face. I ask her "Is there something wrong?"
Before she can answer Mason wakes up and starts moving around. He's fighting the tube we put in his throat to help him breathe. I tell him "Mason, I'm doctor Knight. You're in the hospital. You were having trouble breathing so we put a tube down your throat. Don't fight it. It's there to help you."
He doesn't listen and keeps fighting it. I tell a nurse "Get a sedative."
She walks over to a cabinet and works on grabbing the sedative. I look over at Zoe and ask "Can you calm him down?"
I'm shocked when I hear a voice say "No...surgery..."
I look and see Mason managed to take the tube out on his own and say that. He's still gasping for breathe though. I tell him "You need to put the oxygen mask on."
I reach over and grab the mask, put it on his face, and turn in on. He takes the mask away from his face for a moment and says "No...surgery"before putting it back on. I tell him "Mason, you need surgery. That's the only way the wound will heal."
He looks over to Zoe. Zoe tells me "He doesn't like being put under...sedated."
I look over to Mason and tell him "We don't have to sedate you. We can give you pain meds so you're awake but won't feel anything."
He shakes his head no. The nurse walks over with the sedative and hands it to me. I set it down on the bedside table for now. It's there if I need it. He pulls the mask away again and tells me "pain meds....don't...work...on me..."
The nurse puts the mask back on him. I ask him "Why do pain meds not work?"
"I'm... allergic...to them...and other meds..."
"Are you sure? We have a variety of different pain meds. We can find one you aren't allergic to. We just have to test you."
He shakes his head no again. The nurse walks in with the antidote. She sets the IV up and sticks it in his arm. The antidote is slowly going into him through the IV. He fights the nurse and pulls the mask off again. He tells us "Give...me papers...I'm signing out...to leave..."
I tell him "That's not a good idea. Your bleeding, have poison in your system, trouble breathing. And you came here throwing up blood. You've lost a lot of blood. It's not a good idea to leave."
He fights my nurses by trying to pull the mask off again. Zoe's standing there unsure of what to do and is texting someone on her phone. I reach over and grab the sedative. I'm gonna have to use it on him. I use the sedative on him and his body slowly relaxes and he falls asleep. The nurses move him to a more comfortable position, fix the mask, and IV. I'm about to leave to set up for surgery when suddenly he starts seizing. He's shaking violently on the bed and there's blood coming out of his mouth. I quickly go over and order the nurses to go get another kind of medicine. One of them rushes away to get it, the other stays to help me. He really is allergic to medicine. I've never had a case like this before. Hopefully he won't die.*Picture at the top of the chapter is inside the hospital*
