Chapter 22: Phone Call

Elizabeth Miller's PoV

I get woken up when I hear someone wandering around the house making a lot of noise. I hear my mom ask "Do you have to go hunting now?"
He says "Yes I do. The wolves are used to getting hunted during the day. I'm changing things up. These wolves...seem a lot smarter than any other wolves I've hunted. Don't worry, I'm going out with friends. And I'm prepared. I have some poison bullets."
"What kind of...posion?"
"The newest kind. Version 2057682. It's the lastest kind and it's very hard to cure. It will kill the wolves when it hits them. I'm gonna go now."
I hear his footsteps go down the stairs then leave. I try to open my door but it won't open. My lock is on the inside. Why can't I open my door? I go to the window and watch my dad's pick up truck pull out of the driveway and leave. I open the window and look down. It's too far down for me to try to climb down or jump. I close my window and rush over to my phone. It's early in the morning now but hopefully they will answer. I try my phone but it won't turn on. I look and see it's dead. Crap! I'm screwed! I quickly rush and plug it into my charger. It will take a while before I can finally call them. Hopefully none of them are out on a run or that they didn't let the pack out from the basement.

When my phone is charged enough I leave it in the charger and turn it on. The first number I try is Mason. He doesn't answer so I call Morgan. She answers and I tell her "My dad went out hunting! He had poison bullets!"
She tells me "We know! He hit Mason."
"I'm so sorry I couldn't tell you sooner. My phone died and I'm stuck in my room."
"Do you know what type of poison it is? Matthew went to get medicine from the hospital."
I tell her "I heard my dad say the newest version. I think numbers 2057682? I couldn't hear everything but I think those are the right numbers."
She's about to answer when I hear whimpering. It's so loud. I ask her "What was that?"
"Mason. He can't heal himself so we had to pull the bullets out. We wrapped bandages around it. We figured out the bullets had posion. We think his body won't heal because it's trying to fight against the poison. He was hit by two bullets. To try and slow down the poison we have to force him to walk around to stay awake and slow the spread. He's in so much pain and...and we can't help him."
"I'm so sorry Morgan."
"It's not your fault."
"It is. If I plugged my phone in before falling asleep I could have warned you."
"It's not your fault. It's your dad's fault. He's trying to kill the wolves. We didn't realize he would change his plans and start hunting at night. Normally we plan ahead but...this time we didn't. He caught us off guard. I'm putting you on speaker now."
She changes to speaker and I can hear Zoe yelling at Mason to keep moving. I hide my phone under my bedsheets when I hear my door start to open. It opens and my dad comes in. He looks angry. He tells me "They got away again!"
I ask him "How does that have anything to do with me?"
"You know something about the wolves, don't you?"
"No I don't. I've been stuck in my room!"
"What about yesterday?"
"Taking pictures? That's what I was doing!"
"You were out with someone! You wouldn't have been gone all day if you weren't!"
"I was taking pictures! You don't want me making friends! I get distracted with photography. This isn't the first time I've been out so long."
"It's going to be the last time."
"What?!"
"You heard me! You go to school and come straight home! If you want to go out and take pictures you take me or your mom with you."
"That's not fair! I didn't do anything!"
"It is fair. Stop talking back to me or else you will get punished a lot worse."
He leaves my bedroom and slams the door. I fall down onto my bed and put my head in my hands. I hear Morgan ask "Elizabeth? Are you still there? What happened? We heard yelling?"
I grab my phone and put it to my ear. I tell them "It's just my dad. I'm fine. How's Mason doing? Did Matthew get back yet?"
"No he hasn't come back yet but we told him what you told us. He's searching for the right medicine."
"I wish I could be there to help you."
"There's not much you would be able to do."
I'm about to say something when I hear a loud crashing sound. I hear Morgan hell "Mason!"
I get up from my bed and ask "What happened?"
Zoe yells to the speaker "Mason collapsed! He's unconcious!"
I quickly walk over to my computer and turn it on. I start searching information about the poison. I tell them "Start massaging his muscles and try to move his legs. It should slow down the poison. I'm searching online for more information."
Morgan asks "What else can we do?"
"I'm looking...."
I look at the computer and there's not too much else to help cure it except for medicine. Making the victim move around helps slow down the effect but only for so long. I tell them "There's not too much about it. It's a new poison so the only way to cure it is with the medicine."
Zoe tells us "I'm going to call Matthew. He needs to hurry up! Mason doesn't have much longer before it will kill him."
I hear Zoe's footsteps walking away and Morgan telling Mason "Hold on. He will be back soon."
I hope Matthew makes it back in time. Morgan would never get over his death. And Matthew needs his help learning how to be a wolf.
