James PoV
After punching Matthew I'm told to go to the principals office. I leave with the lunch monitors to the office. I sit down and the principal asks "Why do you think it's a good idea to punch another student?"
I tell him "I don't know what got into me. It won't happen again."
"It better not."
After a moment of silence he tells me "Go back to class before I put this on your record. And... I'll see you tonight at dinner?"
"Yep."
I get up and leave. The advantage of being best friends with Tom is his dad is our school principal. As long as I'm friends with Tom I don't get in trouble. I may be a trouble maker but I have a clean record thanks to Tom's dad.
I get my backpack and head to class. Everyone's talking about what happened during lunch. Kids are looking at me. This is making me popular which is exactly what I wanted. They'll be obsessed with me since Matthew's given up on being popular and Dylan's trying to take his place. I know what I'm doing. I caused some trouble and now I'm the talk of the school. I smirk when people look over at me. But my popularity doesn't last very long. I hear kids around me asking "Did you see Matthew kiss the new girl? That was awesome!"
Also "I can't believe James punched him after he kissed Elizabeth. Can't he get over it? She's taken so wait until she isn't anymore then go after her."
Other kids are asking "Did you hear Matthew went to the nurse and went home early? I hope he's ok. There's rumors saying he can't see out of one eye because of James."
My plan backfired. They thought I was cool and now they don't. I'll find some other way to be the most popular kid. But why would Matthew leave early? It's a black eye and maybe some bruising. We've punched each other before and he's been fine. He has to be hiding something. And I'm going to find out. Playing the bad guy hasn't been working so I'll apologize and get close again. I'm guessing that's what Dylan is doing. Or maybe I be the bad guy and get close to Dylan. Have Dylan be my spy. That could also work. I'll figure it out later. Right now I need to focus on my class or else I'll get in trouble.
