Chapter 40: Somethings Wrong

Matthew Knight's PoV

The pack is about to party but then they all get quiet when my phone goes off. I pick up and ask "Hello?"
My mom tells me "I know you probably don't care but your father is dead. Not biological one. The one that's business crazied."
I ask "When?"
She tells me "A couple hours ago. His jet had problems and it crashed. There were no survivers."
"He's never had problems before. What happened?"
"Police are still trying to figure it out but they believe someone sabotaged the jet. All celebrities and rich businessmen have people who don't like them."
"Are you ok?"
"Yeah. It's just...hard to process. He stormed out and now...he's dead."
There's a moment of silence and then I ask "Do you want me to come home?"
"You don't have to. You're probably out with friends. It is late Friday night."
"Are you at work or home?"
"Home. I had the day shift today."
"I'll come home to be with you."
"You don't have to."
"I want to. It's been a while since you've been home."
There's a moment of silence and then I hear my mom talking to someone else. She asks "How are you here?"
I ask "Mom? What's going on?"
She doesn't answer me. She tells the person "Take whatever you want. Please...no! Please don't! I pro-"
Her voice is cut off when I hear gunshots go off. I ask "Mom? Are you there?"
There's no answer. I don't hesitate when I drop my phone, turn into wolf form, and start running. She can't be dead. I can get there in time. I'm surprised that while I'm running I hear Mason's voice. He asks me "What happened?"
I tell him "My mom said my father...not biological but the one I've known my whole life was killed in a jet accident. Then someone showed up at our house. I'm not sure who but I heard gunshots and she's not answering the phone."
"What is your plan? Run into your house naked? She's gonna get suspicious."
"No. I'll change into clothes before she sees me."
"By then it could be too late."
"I don't know...I just...I don't want to lose her...I finally got her back...if that makes sense."
"It does...trust me I know how hard it is losing your parents."
"What do you mean?"
"I didn't completely tell you the truth. I do have have occasional communication with my family and friends. But...my parents are dead."
"When they that happen?"
"A little over a year ago. My mom found out I wasn't traveling all over the place for my job. She got very depressed. So...she killed herself. She told me that she knew I wasn't traveling all the time. She thought I hated them or something. I didn't know what she was going to do until it was too late. She killed herself right in front of me. My dad died a couple months later because he got very depressed. He started smoking and drinking a lot. He couldn't live without my mom. My very little communication with them led them to dying. It was my fault. And I have to live with that for the rest of my life. Trust me. If your mom dies, it isn't your fault."
I don't know what to say to that. I've never heard Mason open up like this to me. I ask him Does anyone else know? About your parents?"
"No. Your the first person I've told...I just lie about still being in contact with them."
"You should tell them."
"Really? How I'm the reason my parents are dead. They are not gonna look at me the same way anymore."
I get to my backyard and change into Human form. Luckily I have some clothes here hidden so I quickly get those on. While I'm getting dressed Mason changes into Human form and puts the clothes he was carrying in his wolf mouth on. How did we get past the fence? We went through a open gate. I quickly run into my house and to my mom. She's laying on the floor barely concious, bleeding very badly. I quickly grab a towel to try and stop the bleeding. She says "Matthew...you...you came."
I tell her "Stay with me!"
She weakly smiles and tells me "I'm sorry...I've missed out on so much of your life...I have...to go now...this wasn't your fault...it never was...and never will be...don't blame yourself..."
I ask her "Who did this to you?"
She says "the new person in town...the hunter..."
I ask "Was is Mr Miller?"
She nods. She tells me "Don't trust him...he's a friend of your dead father..."
After she says that she falls unconscious. Then stops breathing. I'm about to do CPR but Mason tells me "She's gone."
I just lost both my parents. My biological mom and my not biological father. Why do I not feel anything? Mason tells me "I'm sorry."
I just sit here not feeling anything. My hands have her blood on me but I'm not feeling anything. I'm just...numb. Mason calls the police saying "There's been a murder."
He tells them my address then gets off the phone. He tells me "I'll adopt you. I can because I'm twenty four. I can care for you're until your eighteen."
I nod in agreement. I get up when there's a knock on the door. Mason answers it. The police come in and start asking us questions. Mason tells them that we rushed over here after my phonecall. He lies and tells them we were walking around not too far from here so we were close enough to run back and try to save her but we were too late. They take my mom's phone for evidence and then start putting up crime scene tape. They take my fingerprints so they know it wasn't me. Then they let me wash my hands and go change. Mason and I step outside after I washed off the blood and changed. A police officer tells me "Your gonna have to come with us. You don't have any living guardians here."
Mason tells the police officer "I'll be his legal guardian."
The officer looks at him. He tells Mason "You aren't old enough."
Mason tells him "I'm twenty four years old. I look younger but I'm not. He's sixteen, in two years he can take care of himself. I don't think it would kill him to live with me for two years."
"Ok then. You two have to go the the police station to fill out the legal guardian papers."
We thank him and he goes back to work. I look at Mason and ask "How are we getting there? We don't have a car, phone, or wallets."
He tells me "I had Morgan, Elizabeth, and Zoe go in a car to come get us. They are bringing our phones and wallets."
A couple minutes later they get here. We climb into the car and then we head to the police station. Zoe is driving, Morgan's in the front, then the back seat is me, Elizabeth, and Mason. Elizabeth says "I'm sorry about your mom."
I tell her "Thanks."
She grabs my hand with hers and we sit there in silence. Why so I feel a sudden urge to keep Elizabeth safe? I don't understand this feeling. I look at Elizabeth and she's just looking straight out the window. Mason looks at me and tells me "Matthew, calm down."
I ask him "What do you mean?"
"Crap. I forgot to explain this to you."
"Explain what?"
Elizabeth looks at Mason confused when I ask him what he has to explain. Mason tells me "Your eyes are a golden color."
Elizabeth asks "Why did they change to gold?"
Mason tells us "This is really awkward to explain but... Elizabeth...your Matthew's mate."
Elizabeth asks "What's a mate?"
I tell them "I'm wandering the same thing."
He asks me "Are you feeling a sudden urge to protect her?"
"Yeah."
"That's part of what finding your mate is. All our pack members who have moved away found there mate. If it's a Werewolf with Werewolf then both of them feel the mate bond. Werewolf on Human the Human doesn't feel anything but the Werewolf does."
I ask him "Is Crystal your mate?"
He tells me "I'm not sure."
I ask "How can my eyes go back to normal?"
He tells me "You need to take deep breathes. It's also harder because she's right next to you so that makes it harder. Just...try not to be possessive of her when we get out of the car. You can hold hands but don't go off on people when they talk to her. When you get the mate urge...it drives you crazy...and you can get very uncontrollable...you could change into your wolf if you aren't careful."
Morgan asks "Isn't Matthew a little young to find his mate?"
Mason tells him "You're right. Most of us find our mates when we are eighteen or older. But when a Werewolves emotions are all over the place like when something bad or tramatic happens then they find there mate. There mate is the one person who can calm and comfort them."
Elizabeth smiles and says "I guess I'm lucky I'm his mate. We have sort of been dating."
We get out of the car and all five of us head into the police station. One of the officers asks "How can we help you?"
Mason tells them "His mom was just killed. We are here to fill out a new guardian paperwork."
"Right this way."
We all follow after the officer and into a small conference room. We sit down, Mason and Elizabeth next to me, Zoe and Morgan in other chairs. The officer comes back a moment later with paperwork. He tells us "Fill if out, both of you sign it. Ask me if you have any questions. I'll come back to get it in a little while."
Mason thanks him then the officer closes the door and leaves. Elizabeth has been holding my hand this whole time since we were in the car. It's helping but it's also driving me crazy. I can't stop thinking about her. Mason in a strict voice says "Matthew."
I stop thinking about her and look over to him. He tells me "Calm down. Your eyes are turning gold again."
Elizabeth asks "Would it help if I left the room?"
Without thinking I say "no."
Mason tells her "That won't help...not right now. His wolf side is going crazy about you being his mate. It's all knew to him so he can't control it. Leaving would make him a lot worse. He just needs to stop thinking about you and focus on filling out this paperwork with me."
Elizabeth asks "Then how can I help Matthew? If I leave I make it worse. Being right next to him isn't helping either."
Zoe asks "Can we have Elizabeth step away from him? Where he can still see her but they aren't touching so he can get the paperwork done?"
Mason says "That could work. I don't have very much experience with mates so I don't really know how to help. And...I didn't think Matthew would find his mate this early...no offense to either of you."
Elizabeth let's go of my hand and walks away. I can still see her but we aren't touching. My mind's cleared of thinking about her but I still feel very anxious. Mason asks "You good now?"
I tell him "I'm not sure. I feel...very anxious but my mind is clearer."
Mason says "Let's quickly finish this paperwork then go."
Morgan asks "Mason? You alright? You seem very tense?"
He doesn't answer. I'm feeling crazy and now somethings going on with Mason. Morgan asks again "Mason?"
Mason's fists are clenched. Morgan says "Guys...we need to hurry up the paperwork and get out of here."
Zoe asks "What's going on?"
Morgan tells us "Each Werewolf finds there mate in different ways and each responds differently. That's why it's hard to explain it. I think Mason's wolf is trying to say it's found its mate but Mason's been fighting it. I'm not sure for how long."
Zoe asks "Mason? Is she right?"
Mason tells us "She is."
We can all see his body is very tense and his teeth are gritted. Morgan walks over and puts her arms around his neck and hugs him. It's sort of working to calm him down. She asks "who's your mate?"
He tells us "Crystal."
I reach over and take the paperwork. I start filling it out. I feel all over the place because of Elizabeth. While I'm filling out the paperwork Mason's phone starts ringing. Morgan stops hugging him and answers it. She says "This is Morgan...really? Yeah we are almost done here. Does anyone know how to help? We have two of them. Yeah...ok...sounds good...yeah we'll hurry up...bye."
