Chapter 44: The Funerals

Matthew Knight's PoV

After chasing Elizabeth and telling her how sorry I am her mom's dead she turns around, hugs me, and starts crying. It's so hard not to let my inner wolf take control because she's so upset. Mason and Zoe come over to us but very slowly because Mason needs to get back to Crystal. Zoe asks me "Can you carry her?"
I nod and tell her "I can."
"Pick her up. We need to get Mason back home. We can take Elizabeth there too because it's safe. I'll call the house and see how Crystal's doing."
I pick Elizabeth up and start walking. She's holding on to me very tightly and she's still crying. It's breaking my heart hearing her cry. She's so hurt and there's not much I can do to help her.

When we get to the car I set her down in the backseat and climb in with her. She clings onto me, still crying. Zoe gets in the driver's seat while Mason sits in the passenger seat. Zoe calls the house and asks "Hoes Crystal doing? That's good. Mason's losing it....Yeah. We are on our way back....Elizabeth's dad got convicted. Her mom was just killed...Yeah...I'm bringing them all back...yeah...ok...bye..."
She gets off the phone then starts driving. She's driving as fast as possible without going to high over the speed limit. When we get back to the pack house Crystal comes outside and when Mason opens the car door she hugs him. When she pulls back she smiles and asks "Is that better?"
He just nods his head. Zoe gets out and opens the backseat. Elizabeth's still crying. Zoe helps me get Elizabeth out. When we get out of the car I pick her up and carry her into the house. She won't let go of me for anything. I follow Zoe upstairs, going past pack members all wandering what's wrong. We go into a bedroom and she tells me "This is Morgans room but you can use it."
I tell her "Thanks."
"No problem. I'll..go get Oscar."
Oscar comes up and tells me "There's not much you can do. Just hold her and try to calm her down. She's gonna fall asleep soon from crying. You might have to sleep next to her for her to calm down because she's being very clingy. Humans aren't Werewolves feeling what we feel...but they can get very clingy."
I ask "You mean I'm gonna have to sleep next to her?"
"Yeah. Maybe in each other's arms. It depends on what she needs."
I talk with Oscar for a couple more minutes until he closes the door and leaves. Eventually Elizabeth does stop crying and she falls asleep. Her arms are tightly around me, she doesn't want me to leave her. I lay down and she's next to me, holding me. I wrap my arms around here and eventually I fall asleep. I didn't get very much sleep last night because of my mom's death. Now her mom's dead too.

I wake up a couple hours later and she's still sleeping. I move some but then she wakes up. She looks at me and she starts blushing from embarrassment. She asks me "How long have we been like this."
I tell her "I'm not sure. After you saw your mom's destroyed car you hugged me and started crying. I had to carry you to the car and then up here. You wouldn't let go of me the whole time. Eventually you fell asleep and I did too for a while."
We both slide out of each other's arms then sit up. She says "I'm sorry..."
I tell her "It's not your fault. We all grieve in different ways."
"It's not that...it's when I was talking with my dad...I let him get to me. He told me he forced my mom to marry him and then have me. He said she never truly loved me so she was going to leave me for good. I guess...for a moment I actually believed she didn't love me. But he also said that no jails can hold him. He's escaped before and he'll do it again."
"Wait...he's a criminal?"
"Yeah. He never told me his name. He just said he'd have to kill me because I know. He said my mom knew which is why he always abused her. He threatened to kill me if she told anyone."
"That means we should move. He's going to find you here. Someone's gonna have to adopt you anyways."
I stand up and hold my hand out to her. She stands up and takes my hand. We head downstairs and there's pack members all over the place, eating, talking, playing games, chasing each other around, or yelling at there kids. Mason walks over to us and asks "How are you guys doing?"
I tell him "We've been better. Elizabeth has something to tell you."
Mason asks "What is it?"
"My dad told me he forced my mom to marry him and have me. He'd abuse her and threatened to kill me if she told anyone his secret. He's a criminal. He escaped from jail. He told me he got married, had a kid, changed his name, and took a hunting job where he's always moving so no one will know who he really is. By the time they do he's long gone at another town. He was going to kill me because he told me that. That's why he killed my mom. She was finally free and going to go see her family and friends."
Mason says "That means we have to move. It's the only way to keep you safe. I'll have another pack member sign the papers to be your guardian. It would be weird if I was the guardian for both of you and then you get married to each other some day."
