Chapter Nine: Verdimillious
---

Cali and Greta rushed through the hallways of the building towards their next class. Cali almost fell to the ground as she breathed heavily, her hands placed on her knees and she tried to catch her breath. Meanwhile Greta froze in her place as she caught sight of the seating chart.

"Cali," Greta whispered, nudging the girl to catch her attention.

"What?" Cali asked curiously as she straightened herself to before noticing that the classroom had already been full of dejected looking students who appeared to have had the same idea as them and chose to arrive early however nobody was sitting beside somebody of their own house which confused her until she looked ahead to see the chat before her. "I thought..." Cali before Greta took a seat beside Severus.

"Miss. Higgs," The professor called as her head snapped towards the professor. "Please take a seat near Mr. Wilkes." Cali froze, scanning the room.

"Sorry professor," Cali muttered, moving as far away from the boy as possible.

With that, the professor turned away, wandering throughout the classroom until class began. Once it was time, they sat down at their desk and smiled widely before checking attendance.

"Wonderful! Wonderful! Now, today we will be learning our first spell." An excited chatter erupted as the woman nodded. "Yes, yes. Please focus," She called which caused the chatter to stop as she grabbed their attention once more.

"Has anyone heard of the green sparks spell?" Nobody raised their hand.

"It's a fairly simple spell which is why I thought it might be a nice one for you to try. Ollivander has speculated that this spell or the red sparks spell are common spells that customers cast when they enter due to the ease of the spell. It's believed to have been created for dueling purposes as an attempt to let people know when there are enemies around but has found many other uses over the ears." The professor took a deep breath as they turned to the chalkboard to write the incantation.

"Verdimillious," She announced before adding a drawing. "Now, I want to pretend that you're drawing a bird's beak, like this. Begin at the top, creating a downward curve with a sharp turn and then a line that has an upwards curve." She examined as students took out their wands, Cali grabbing hers from her nearby bag as she took a deep breath.

"I bet you can't do it," Gregory Wilkes sneered from beside her.

"What? Because I'm a muggleborn?"

"No, because you're a pathetic blood traitor." Cali nodded at this, her lips pursed as she gripped her wand. "But I don't mind that you lied, saved my time from talking to a weak and disgusting Hufflepuff." Cali scoffed at this.

"Please," Cali replied, taking out her book and turning it to the right page, mumbling out the pronunciation as she moved her wand in the corresponding movements. "Vur-de-mull-ee-us," Cali attempted and ignored the snort that escaped Gregory.

"Gregory, please stop." He sent her an incredulous look.

"As if, blood traitor."

Cali closed her eyes, trying to even her breathing. "Ver-duh-MILL-ee-us."

The spell once again failed just as the professor passed. "Close, it's vur-duh-MILL-ee-us not Ver-duh-MILL-ee-us," The professor corrected as Cali nodded gratefully. Before she could attempt it, Gregory shouted the incantation loudly, using the wand movement and a small wisp of green came out of his wand.
