Chapter Twenty Six

"How's our girl?" Boden asked as Kelly walks into his office.
"Sleeping finally." Kelly said.
"I'm sorry." Boden said.
"I feel bad for her." Kelly said.
"She has the whole house with her." Boden said.
Kelly smiles. He walks into the common room and gets coffee then gets to his office.
"Lieutenant, I left a plate for her." Jack said.
"Thank you, Dalton." Kelly said.
Alexis begins dreaming.
"Alex!" James shouts.
"Boo!" Alexis whispered as she picks him up.
James screams and Alexis smiles.
"Careful." Wyatt said.
Diane smiles at her kids.
"Let's do some homework while Mom's cooking." Alexis said.
"Thank you." Diane mouths to her daughter.
They begin doing homework.
"I hate homework." James said.
"Dude, you're in 3rd grade." Alexis said.
James smiles at his best friend. They finish homework just in time for dinner.
"How was your day?" Diane asked.
"The same." Alexis said.
"I learned how to tell time!" James said excitingly.
Alexis smiles big at the sight of joy of her little brother.
They finish dinner and it starts to get late so everyone goes into their rooms except Wyatt.
"Go to bed!" Alexis shouts knowing her 8 year old brother didn't go to bed.
"I'm going!" James shouts back.
A few minutes pass and the house gets smokey.
"Mom!" Alexis yelled.
"Alex!" James yelled.
"Is everyone ok?" Alexis's mom yelled.
The smoke gets heavy fast. James and Alexis's mom Diane pass out.
"Guys?" Alexis weakly said barely conscious.
"James?" Alexis weakly calls out.
"Mom?" Alexis weakly said.
Alexis starts crying knowing that she just lost the only family she knew.
Alexis wakes up crying.
"Hey." Kelly said.
Alexis doesn't calm down.
"Alex." Kelly said.
Alexis starts hyperventilating.
"Al." Kelly said.
Alexis doesn't stop.
"Alexis Rae, in and out." Kelly said.
Alexis tries and fails.
"In through your nose, out your mouth." Kelly said.
Alexis calms down but her face is swollen. Kelly wipes her tears.
"Are you hungry because Dalton saved you a plate." Kelly said.
Alexis nods. Kelly kisses her forehead.
"I love you Alexis Rae." Kelly said.
"I love you too Kelly Severide." Alexis said.
Kelly walks into the common room.
"How is she?" Mouch asked.
"Grieving." Kelly said as he puts the plate in the microwave.
Suddenly he feels arms around his waist.
"I'm surprised to see you out." Kelly said.
"Mean." Alexis said.
Kelly smiles.
"Always finding a way to tease you." Kelly said.
"Jerk." Alexis said.
Kelly smiles.
"Morgan, can I talk to you quick?" Boden asked.
Kelly messes with Alexis's hair.
"I hate you." Alexis said.
"No you don't." Kelly said.
Alexis smiles and walks to Boden's office.
"I know you don't want to hear this but, how are you feeling?" Boden asked.
Alexis struggles to finds the right words.
"Why don't you take the rest of shift off." Boden said.
"I'm fine, really. Wyatt being here just made me go in a downwards spiral." Alexis said.
"I know you don't want to here this but no you're not." Boden said.
"I'm ok. Seeing Wyatt brought up memories. Bad memories." Alexis said.
"Talk to someone." Boden said.
"I'd rather not. I don't want to relive it again and again." Alexis said.
"Can you talk to Severide about it at least?" Boden asked.
"He already knows. He's the one who calmed me down." Alexis said.
Boden looks at his young firefighter.
"If anything happens, I'm allowing Brett to pull you. We'll having a filler standing by." Boden said.
"Thank you." Alexis said.
Alexis walks out.
"Hey sweetface." Kelly said as he holds Alexis's plate of food.
"Barbeque is tomorrow." Alexis said.
"Is it now?" Kelly said.
"Give me the food." Alexis said.
"No." Kelly said.
"Let me check that hand." Brett said.
Alexis puts out her hand for Brett to see.
"I want my food." Alexis said staring at Kelly.
"Nope." Kelly said.
"Kelly." Alexis whines.
Kelly smiles.
"Nope." Kelly said teasing Alexis.
Alexis kicks Kelly as Brett checks out her hand.
"Will you guys quit it until after I finish?" Brett asked.
"If he just gives me my food." Alexis said.
Brett shakes her head.
"Your hand is fine." Brett said as he takes the plate from Kelly and gives it to Alexis.
"And that's why she's my best friend." Alexis said.
Kelly acts like he's hurt. Alexis starts laughing.
