Peter Maximoff gently shut the door behind him, not even bothering to muffle his sniffles as he quietly locked his bedroom door behind him. He wiped his chocolate-tainted eyes that were pooling with water as his legs trembled so hard they brought the shaking boy down to the floor. His back was hunched against the wood of his door as he cried quietly, “Why can’t anyone love me?” He wrung his hands as he buried his head there, “Why can’t I ever be good enough for anyone?”
The teenager never meant to anger his siblings, but of course, his pathetic self did exactly that. He didn’t know there was a mission, he had counted that someone on his team would’ve told him so he could’ve helped instead of doing his homework. Why no one told him was a good question, Peter thought, maybe the Avengers didn’t think that the fifteen year old was good enough to fight.
A few days ago, his sister went on a mission with Steve, Natasha, and Bucky to Europe regarding some HYDRA business. So when Pietro, Tony, Clint, and Vision came back worn from a mission, Peter was flummoxed. He waited for the others to leave so he could ask his brother, “There was a mission?”
Pietro retorted as he darted his crystal dyed eyes met Peter’s dark brown ones angrily, “Of course there was!” His tone was firm, angry if anything. “Are we not Avengers?”
Peter was slightly taken aback, he had never been spoken to like that before.
The older Maximoff continued, “We could have used your help. Not that it would’ve been a lot anyway, but it would’ve been something.”
Confused, Peter inquired, “Pietro, what are you talking about?”
Pietro’s answer was dripping with laced anger, “Cut the bullshit, Peter! You were supposed to join us, but of course, you were too busy being lazy and relaxing instead! But of course, you don’t care about the world around you! News flash, the world doesn’t revolve around you! You only care about other people when it’s about you! You and your nightmares and problems! You can do no wrong!”
“That’s not true!”, Peter defended, “I didn’t even know there was a mission! I was doing my homework!”
Pietro sighed as he raked a hand through his tresses of his platinum hair, “Then you should’ve used your common sense! Maybe there’s a reason why you’re home alone or are you that dumb and ignorant?”
Peter said nothing to that. The Maximoff cast his eyes down, humiliated as pink crept up his cheeks. He refused to speak, partly due to what his older brother was pointing out, and partly because he hated how Pietro was belittling him as if he was an outsider in his own home. Even the Tower still didn’t feel like one yet.
“Well?” Pietro spoke as his voice got louder, “I don’t have all day!”
Peter’s voice was low as he replied, “I didn’t think like that.” He dipped his head down apologizing, “I’m sorry.”
Pietro snarled, angered more at his younger brother’s apology, “Of course you didn’t! Then why are you going to school, hmm? This is why you will never be good enough for anyone, as a quote hero or even as a regular person! I didn’t use to believe Ma and Pa that you had issues, but now I see that they’re right. Wanda was right, you really are unlovable!”
He huffed, shaking his head, “Just get out of my sight! I don’t even know what to do with you!”
Peter cried as he buried his head in his hands. He had been so stupid! He hiccuped as tears continued to stream down his face. He felt so hurt and betrayed. He thought his family loved him, but apparently he was wrong. Pietro was his older brother, who always had his back and had always been kind and loving towards him. Peter had never seen Pietro so angry before, it almost scared him. And the fact that he had made Pietro that angry was enough to make Peter sob all over again.
The fifteen year old sniffled again, thinking that Pietro was right. Perhaps he would never get to become a full-fledged hero, and his team didn’t want him anyways since no one bothered to let him know what was happening. Peter didn’t know why he felt so hurt, it was the truth anyway.
The boy was still angry at Pietro though. His brother had no right to say what he did and make him feel like this. It wasn’t his fault, but at the same time of course, it was. Peter wanted to sleep, but with the anxiety only beginning to pick up he knew he wouldn’t get sleep until a few hours at minimum.
Peter sighed softly, letting his head thud against the wood of his door. HE couldn’t get out what Pietro had said about Wanda. “Wanda was right, you really are unlovable!” He didn’t know that Wanda and Pietro had talked about him behind his back. It stung, making Peter wonder if his siblings ever really loved him or even wanted him around.
The idea of that was enough to make Peter start crying all over again. He hoped no one could hear him so they wouldn’t have to know how pathetic he truly was. So pathetic, that not even his own siblings wanted him around.
Peter wondered aloud, “If I had been on the mission would Pietro still think those things about me?” Through his cries, he deduced the answer as a yes. Wasn’t that sad, the teenager wondered, what else did his family think about him?
Peter wasn’t sure how long he had been sitting there with tears streaming down his face when the quiet yet kind voice of Wanda Maximoff broke Peter’s silence.
Wanda spoke, “Peter? Are you okay? Clint said that something happened between you and Pietro, do you want to talk about it?”
Peter opened his mouth but then closed it. He couldn’t trust Wanda, not after what his brother had said. He crossed his arms in front of his chest silent. All he wanted was to be loved, but no one could ever want him. Pietro had made that very clear.
