*Spoilers for the new SS episode just below in bold!*
I decided I'm going to edit every Ethan to Janus since I'm trying to attach the name to Deceit. Make it his, ya know? So there will no longer be Ethan, only Janus. Just a heads up.
For the most part Thomas' cats were rather scientific in their lives, none believing in the clan cats' afterlife and just living instead of dwelling on the prospect of death. That is, until one fateful night when Remus got the brilliant idea to take Roman, Logan and Virgil all to a pet cemetery near Thomas's house.
"Remus this plan of seeing a supposed ghost is illogical. Ghost don't exist," Logan said as the troop trotted across the dark green grass, using their heightened scenes of sight to aid them in their journey.
"Don' t be such a prick Logan," said Roman.
"You're the one talking Roman, I can feel the fear flowing off your pelt in waves," snickered Virgil as he stuck close to Logan's side, remembering the last time he was outside at night.
"I'm not scared!" Roman shouted.
"Prove it then! When we get to the cemetery touch Delilah's grave," said Remus.
Roman's face fell and Virgil smirked.
"Remus Delilah's grave was the first one in the cemetery! It's said to be haunted by her vengeful spirit!" cried the ginger tom.
"Well, if you're not scared then you will touch it," snickered Virgil.
"Stop your yapping! We're here," said Remus as they passed the small gate and fence.
As they walked they saw an array of headstones and markers for deceased pets, the animals ranging from common pets like cats and dogs to bizarre ones like anacondas and lemurs. They finally reached the grave of Delilah, her tombstone being the largest and a cat that resembled her carved into the grey stone.
"Okay Princey. Touch the grave," said Remus as they sat down.
The ginger tom gulped nervously before stepping forwards, extending a paw to the stone. Just before he touched it he chickened out, quickly going to hide behind Remus.
"I can't do it!" he cried, covering his head with his paws.
"I'll do it!" said Virgil, trotting right up to the grave.
"Virgil you don't have to," said Logan.
Virgil looked at them all before not so subtlety placing his paw on the stone. They all froze for a second before looking around. Nothing seemed to change besides a warm breeze rustling the grass.
"Well this was a waste of time," said Logan.
Then a wail ripped across the silence, frightening all cats so much that they jumped. Looking around wildly they watched as the headstone started to glow faintly. A mist seemed to come out of it and swirl around Virgil who remained stock still the entire time, his eyes following the fog. It soon started to take a shape, manifesting into a misty cat, eyes blacker than a night with no moon and stars, looking hollow and soulless.
By this time a Roman, Remus and Logan had ran for cover behind a tree, leaving Virgil alone with this being.
"Who dares disturb my rest?" a disembodied voice whistled, the cat staring at Virgil but never opened its mouth.
"I dare," Virgil said, looking defiantly at the cat.
"You? You dare?" the cat tilted its head.
"Yes, yes I do. Are you Delilah?" asked Virgil.
"Yes. I'm the one referred to as Delilah," the cat's misty whiskers twitched.
"I'm Virgil and I'm just here to ask why you frighten all those who touch your grave," said Virgil.
"For peace young one. Do you know how difficult it is to find rest in the afterlife when you constantly have cats poking around your grave. It's like taking a wonderful nap in the sun only to be jabbed with a stick every time you get comfortable. I scare them because fear often motivates everyone more than kindness. If you frighten someone bad enough once they typically won't return," the disembodied voice hissed into Virgil's ear.
"Thank makes sense. Okay, thank you Delilah for you time and I promise not to bother you again. Hope you enjoy your rest," Virgil said.
"Thank you young one. I wish a long and happy life for you and your kindness," whispered the voice before the mist cat dissolved and retreated back into the grave.
The world was silent.
"What was that?!" Remus cried as the three nervously started walking over to him.
"That was Delilah. Now let's go. She needs rest," said Virgil, standing up and leading the troop out of the cemetery and back home.
"I'll be watching you."
