Y/n’s POV-
We kept riding to get some distance on the smoke filled area that the commander had trapped the female Titan in. Everyone seemed extremely surprised, also very happy to see the threat gone from our tail. I have to say, it definitely was nice not having her footsteps shaking the Earth right behind me.
“Hitch your horses a little further ahead, then switch to ODM. Y/n and I have to leave for now. Eld is in charge of the squad until we are back. Hide Eren a suitable distance away from that Titan. Look after our horses!” Levi commanded, giving me a look before taking off back to where the Female was.
I jumped off of my horse and took off after him, until we both landed on a branch that Erwin was standing on. Our goal now was to get whoever was inside this Titan out. I got to look into her eyes once more, this time without the added pressure of the squad and my horse. There was something about this Titan… something I couldn’t put a finger on yet.
“It looks like she’s stopped,” Levi told Erwin.
“We can’t drop our guard yet. I’m just impressed the two of you managed to lead her to this spot,” Erwin responded.
“The credit goes to the rear squad members who gave their lives fighting her. They bought us time. It would’ve been impossible otherwise,” Levi said.
“Is that so?” Erwin asked.
“Yes, but Levi did well to tame the squad and their confusion as well, Eren nearly ruined the whole operation with his sensitivity,” I added.
“I still can’t believe the brat actually listened to me… something told me he was going to transform no matter what. Something else must have stopped him. But, either way, thanks to the rear support we will get to see who’s inside this one’s nape. Let’s just hope they’re not wetting themselves inside there.”
Erwin gave Levi and I a few minutes to talk while they reinforced the female with a few more traps just to make sure she couldn’t move.
“I’m glad it all worked out,” I said.
“Definitely came close to failing,” Levi said with a pause, looking over to me, “By the way, I know you volunteered to be in the back because if it came down to it you were going to sacrifice yourself. Brat.”
“You knew that we weren’t just going up against any enemy… Erwin told you he thought it was a shifter like Eren didn’t he.”
“Yes. He did.”
“Why wasn’t I told?”
“Guess he didn’t find it necessary. It wouldn’t have changed the goal of getting the enemy to the forest to trap them,” Levi answered.
“I guess so, but just so you know. I volunteered to be in the back because I thought we were facing a soldier, and I was willing to be the first one they came to attack. But you are right, once I realized it was a Titan, I was ready to sacrifice myself. I hoped it wouldn’t come to that,” I explained.
“What happened to our promise?” Levi asked.
“You told Eren to make a choice he would least regret. Well saving the whole squad with the loss of only one life was what I would least regret… but I didn’t want to, and I still don’t want to break our promise. I don’t want to leave you and I definitely don’t want you to leave me. I’ll try harder to come up with alternate ways that wouldn’t require losses.”
