I Fear That I Learned to Fly

Mikutori's brain caught up after a few seconds, her eyes going wide as she realized what her uncle was insinuating.

"Do you...really think I could use my feathers to fly?"

"Yeah. Here. Lower your feathers to about a foot off the ground. And make them parallel to the ground, too," Kukotori took several steps towards his niece, watching as her feathers lowered towards the ground in sync, rotating until they floating above the ground. Mikutori was standing right in front of them, placing them right in front of her feet.

Kukotori held out his hands, allowing Mikutori to use them for leverage as she stepped up onto her feathers. One foot on each feather, her foot sitting perpendicularly on the feather, the ends wrapping around the arch of each foot.

The balance was weird, like she was floating on living objects. But, the feathers held her light weight, and she was still gripping her uncle's hands.

"Perfect. Now, I want you to try raising and lowering your altitude, go slow at first. I'll let go, but I'll be here if you need me," Kukotori gently let go of her hands, Mikutori immediately shooting her hands out for balance.

A thought came to her, and she plucked off two more feathers, holding them in her hands as her eyes continued glowing bright in the large room. She thought hard about what she wanted to do, willing for her feathers to move slower than they usually did, for she didn't want to jerk herself around. She started rising, hands at her sides but slightly outwards, in an A-frame shape.

After rising and lowering a few times, Mikutori tried going faster, moving around the room. She rose up towards the ceiling, and, feeling a little courageous, let go of the two feathers in her hands along with stepping off of her right foot-feather.

She immediately fell forwards, losing her balance. Letting out a yell, she institutionally balled up, expecting to hit the floor, when instead, her feathers wrapped around her left foot, all four holding her up from her ankle and foot. She was hanging upside-down, loose foot dangling oddly as she opened her eyes, staring at her left foot wrapped in feathers.

Kukotori was laughing below her, hands on his hips, staring up at the odd appearance of his niece hanging upside down from a single ankle.

"What do I do?" Mikutori yelled down to her uncle, hands dangling below her as she floated there by her ankle.

"I don't know, why don't you figure it out for yourself?" Kukotori laughed, backing up a few steps to watch her think, discreetly coughing into his arm. Mikutori blew up at her already-hanging hair-feathers, face pulling into a thinking-pout. A thought crossed her mind, and Mikutori had two feathers let go of her ankle, one at a time, before grabbing them with her hands again, the fibers wrapping around her palms. She had the hand-feathers rise, keeping the others still, her hands raising above her head as she pulled herself upright mid-air.

After successfully righting herself, Mikutori stared down at her feet, one still wrapped in two feathers, the other bare and dangling. Concentrating, Mikutori had the second feather on her ankle unwrap itself, straightening out below her other foot. Rewrapping it around the arch of that foot, Mikutori was back to the position she was in at the beginning of the training session.

Mikutori lowered herself to the ground, stepping off of the feathers before having them pile themselves into her waiting palm, eyes dulling to their original light blue.

"...Wow. That was..." Mikutori didn't even know what to say. Her mind was already turning on different techniques and styles she could try, and all she wanted to do was fly again. She wanted to get better.

"That was amazing!" Kukotori gushed, so proud of his niece. They hadn't trained like this in a long time, and it was a bit nostalgic to think about when he and Haiirotori had first taught her how to throw knives, or the basics of fighting and self-defense. She had come a long way since then, and had more room to grow.
