I watched as steam rose from my miso soup. Across the table, my two childhood teammates discussed their new teams of genin.

"I think Hinata just needs to gain more confidence. She's a strong shinobi, but as soon as someone or something puts a single doubt in her mind, she freezes," Kurenai explained.

Asuma leaned back in his seat. "That's the Hyuga girl on your team, right?"

Kurenai nodded.

"I don't have any complaints about my team. They're all at the level they should be," Asuma bragged.

I swirled my spoon around in my bowl mindlessly. "My student who's blind wants to learn sound jutsu. I don't even know the first thing about sound jutsu, so how am I supposed to teach it to him?"

Kurenai frowned. "I don't know much about it either. I know it's rare to come across people who use it, but that's it."

"Yeah," Asuma agreed. "As far as I knew it was myth until recently. The kid's gonna have his work cut out for him if that's his goal."

"Maybe Kakashi would know," I sighed, gaining myself eye rolls from both my friends.

"(Y/N), you've been after him ever since we were genin. You were so adamant on being close to him that you even followed him to the Anbu. That was fourteen years ago and you still haven't made any progress. When will you realize he's going to die alone with his nose in an Icha Icha book?" Kurenai said, making my chest feel tight and shoulders heavy.

"Wow, way to call me out Kurenai," I mumbled. "But it's not like I'm pursuing him romantically, I just think he needs a  friend. People who care about him."

"Guy cares about him." Asuma shrugged. "I'd say they're friends."

"The poor mans whole team died, and then his sensei. Do you guys not feel the slightest bit bad for him?"

Asuma let out a long sigh. "Obviously it was sad, (Y/N). All of us were close with Rin and Obito and everyone loved the Fourth Hokage. You lost your sensei that day too remember?" I frowned at the memory. "Kakashi doesn't make it easy to befriend him. He keeps people at a far enough distance that they feel like they know him, when in reality he's guarded."

I was about to answer when someone spoke my name.

"(Y/N) (L/N)?"

I turned around to see an Anbu standing a few feet away from our booth.

"Yes, that's me."

"Lord Third wishes to see you and Team Two in his office."

I nodded. "All right. I'll meet everyone there."

Without saying another word, the Anbu disappeared.

"Seems like I'm going to have to end lunch early," I said, pushing my soup over to Asuma.

My two old friends waved at me as I left.

During my short walk to the Hokage's office, I couldn't help but think about what my old teammates had said. Kakashi has always been a team player and a kind man, but Asuma was right in saying he was guarded to a degree. Who could blame him? If I was rumoured to be a "friend killer" and grown up the way Kakashi did, I wouldn't easily trust anyone either.
