I didn't know if the nerves I was feeling were my own, or if I was just picking up on the feelings of my students as I lead them to their first exam.
As we turned the corner I saw Kakashi already sending his students inside.
"Good luck you three. I'm proud of you as a team."
Kakashi's sweet words made a smile spread across my face, but it disappeared once his team disappeared behind the double doors.
"The same goes for you three. Remember my golden rule, okay?"
Big, nervous grins spread across their faces and one by one they went into the other room.
"Golden rule?" Kakashi questioned once we were alone.
"Yeah," I blushed. "I've been teaching them a lot about teamwork and I call it the 'golden rule'. It's dumb, but I think it's important to learn."
Kakashi smiled under his mask. Big enough that it reached his one visible eye. "It's not dumb."
I bit my lip in an attempt to hide my smile and walked with Kakashi down to the waiting room. The other sensei's, including Asuma and Kurenai, were already there.
"How many rookie teams entered this year?" I asked no one in particular.
"Twelve all together. We're the only four who entered newbie teams," Asuma said as Kakashi and I sat across from him and Kurenai.
"You picked a bad year too."
I looked up to see Iruka standing before us. His features were narrowed in a serious frown.
Kurenai raised a quizzical brow. "What do you mean?"
"The proctor for the first exam this year is Ibiki."
"Of all people it had to be that sadist," Kakashi grumbled, slouching down in his seat and extending both his arms along the back of the bench.
I squirmed in my place when I felt his arm graze my back as he rested it behind me.
"What do you mean by sadist?" Kurenai asked.
Asuma flicked his cigarette and stomped it out with the heel of his boot. "I guess you wouldn't know since you're a new jonin."
"He's definitely a pro in his field," Kakashi spoke up.
"You got that right," I agreed.
I accidentally met Kakashi's gaze and looked away quickly. What was wrong with me? Lately I've been able to do nothing but fiddle and squirm in his presence.
"A pro in what?" Kurenai asked, frustration lacing her tone.
"Interrogation and torture," Asuma answered. "He's the Marshal of the Anbu's interrogations unit."
"How pleasant," Kurenai sighed sarcastically.
"And the worst part is he corners people psychologically, controlling their psyche. He reveals the fundamental weakness of a person."
Pressing my palms against my eyes, I leaned back in my seat. Completely forgetting about Kakashi's arm, but once I made contact with him his heat calmed me down.
"Crap. Maybe I should have listened and waited another year before enrolling those kids."
"Where did all that confidence you had in your team go?" Kakashi asked. "I've seen them in action. They work like a complete unit, and if they can't do it then our teams have no chance."
