|YOU|

My team all stood in front of me. Each one of them was equally confused as to why I called them here on their day off.

Maya on the other hand was completely content to sit on a stump at the edge of the training ground.

"I know all of you are wondering what I have to say, so I'm not going to beat around the bush," I explained. "Earlier today I recommended the three of you for the chunin exams."

Kamina's mouth dropped opened and the other two boys stared at me in shock.

"So soon?" Amari questioned.

I cocked a brow at him. "Yes, but I can revoke it easily if you don't believe you're ready."

"No! I'm ready."

"Good. Anyone else unsure of my decision?"

Jin rapidly shook his head. Kamina didn't seem so sure, lowering his head and kicking at the rocks by his feet. Even though he seemed hesatent, I took his silence as a good sign.

"Now that we have that out of the way, I want to try a test of my own with the three of you." I held up the four sheets of chakra paper Kakashi had given me.

"Paper?" Amari deadpanned.

"These are litmus papers," I corrected. "It reacts to a persons chakra to show them their true chakra nature. Also known as their affinity."

I held up one of the sheets in my hand and let my chakra flow through it. The paper ripped in half and I let it fall to the ground.

"If you have wind nature, like me, the paper with split in two. With lightning the paper will wrinkle, fire the paper will burn, with water it'll become wet and if you have an earth nature it will crumble. I want each of you to use it."

I handed each boy a piece of paper. My eyes were locked on Kamina and I waited in anticipation to see what his paper would do.

He bit his lip in concentration and the paper ripped down the middle. Relief washed over me but it was short lived when Jin started yelling.

"Oh hell no!"

"What is it?" I asked, looking down to see his litmus was dripping wet. The irony was amusing.

"This has got to be a joke. There's no way I have an affinity to water! I hate water!"

I tried to calm him down. "Maybe this is exactly what you needed to overcome your fear. Now you can learn to control water and have no reason to be scared of it."

Jin locked eyes with me as he dropped his paper. "No way. I'd rather give up being a shinobi than work with water."

"You're such a wimp," Amari spoke next to us, holding up his wrinkled paper.

"I am not! You're scared of something too, it's just that you're not man enough to admit it!"

Amari rolled his eyes but didn't respond.

"That's enough. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Teamwork is the golden rule of being a shinobi, and I can't stress it enough how important it is that you can rely on each other for these exams."

"Just because we make fun of each other doesn't mean we're not a good team," Amari explained.

"Yeah," Jin agreed. "I tease Kamina about having a nasty tan line all the time! But if anyone else decided to make fun of him for being blind, I'd whoop them."

A smile crept across my face. "Well then I guess I have nothing to worry about. However, there is one catch before you can compete in the exams."

"Oh god, I knew it was too good to be true," Jin grumbled.

"There is a preliminary round for any new genin looking to participate in the exams. Someone complained to the Hokage that you weren't ready, so you have to prove yourselves worthy before you can compete."

Amari crossed his arms. "Do you know what the preliminary is going to be?"

"Even if I did I wouldn't tell you. If you can't solve them on your own then you obviously aren't ready to be a chunin."

The boys all went silent and I clapped my hands together.

"That's all I had planned for you boys. We'll start training again tomorrow."

My team began to leave. Jin grabbed his sister and they walked with Amari back towards the village. Before they were too far I caught some of their conversation.

"If you don't like water, why don't you just try being a medical ninja? You're always going off about needing one."

"That's actually not a bad idea."

I felt sense of pride hearing them support each other, but I shook the feeling away as Kamina passed by me. I caught his wrist before he could get far.

"Sensei?" He said in confusion.

"Having a wind affinity is a good first step towards being a sound user. You're closer to your goal than you think."

Kamina's lips turned up in a hopeful smile. "Thank you, Sensei."

"Heh-heh," I chuckled, flipping the page of my book.

"How can you read that stuff in public? Aren't you worried people will think you're some kind of perv?"

Looking over my shoulder, I found (Y/N) standing over me as her eyes scanned the pages of Icha Icha paradise.

I snapped the book shut and slid it into my pocket. "No. Most people know it's rude to read over someone's shoulder. How did it go with your students?"

(Y/N) plopped down on the bench next to me. "Good! Thankfully Kamina has a wind affinity." She giggled. "And Jin's is water which is ironic because he's scared of it."

"And your other student?" I asked.

"I was actually going to talk to you about that. His affinity is lightning. With Jin and Kamina it's easy because I use both water and wind nature, but I've never learned how to use lightning. I guess my question is would you help me train him? Or at least teach me how to?"

I couldn't help but smile softly. Luckily it was hidden behind my mask.

"I don't see why I couldn't do that. We could start training both our teams tomorrow."

(Y/N) grinned. "Thank you."

I mirrored her expression. It was hard not to. Her bright personality was infectious.

"No problem."
