A few weeks went by and Kakashi and I had mended our relationship to a degree. I still felt awkward around him, but we reached some sort normality where we could train our teams together. I was even there when Sasuke and Naruto almost killed one another during their spar.
Not only them, but everyone in the village seemed more on edge after the attack by Orochimaru. It was almost like no one felt safe and secure anymore.
The whole situation especially affected the students who participated in the exams. Kamina became much more distant. Any progress the team and I made to make him open up to us was washed away, sending us back to square one. Jin and Amari were more irritable since the event as well. They were known for provoking one another, but lately the tension between them had grown much worse.
For some, the atmosphere left behind after the attack was too much to bare.
I was summoned to the Hokage's office and reached the entrance at the same time as Kakashi rushed out.
"Kakashi? Where are you going?" I asked.
Kakashi walked backwards down the hall as he answered me. "Sasuke left the village to train under Orochimaru. I'll explain more details when I get back."
"Actually—"
I looked over to see Tsunade, our new Hokage, standing in the doorway of her office.
"—I called (Y/N) here so that she can go with you, Kakashi. I chose Shikamaru to lead this mission and he chose a group of genin to assist him. I need the two of you to follow behind."
I met Kakashi's gaze and he nodded in confirmation. "I'll explain everything to you on the way. Let's go."
Quickly bowing respectfully towards Tsunade, I hustled to catch up to Kakashi who was now being lead by Pakkun.
"So what happened exactly?" I asked.
"Sasuke and Naruto have always been rivals. It's been that way since they were in the academy. For Naruto, the only person whose approval matters to him is Sasuke's. For Sasuke, he's seen Naruto improve so quickly that he feels as if he's standing still."
I wasn't quite understanding what he was explaining to me. "So Sasuke left the village wh—"
Before I finished my sentence I put two-and-two together in my head. "Oh! Sasuke craves to be stronger so he left to train under Orochimaru!"
Kakashi nodded. "Yeah, and if Naruto catches up to Sasuke there's no telling what'll happen. They almost killed each other while training, who knows what they'll do unsupervised."
I could sense Kakashi's unease and panic. As much as he hid it, he loved his students. They each held a special place in his heart, even if he never showed it.
Pakkun lead us deep into the forest, a fair way from the village.
"Sasuke and Naruto are straight ahead," he spoke.
Kakashi picked up speed and I tried my best to keep up.
We reached a high waterfall the flowed over into the Valley of the End, and laying on the rocks below was Naruto.
"We're too late," Kakashi said in a hushed tone, kneeling down by his students side.
I took a good look around at the rubble. A fight happened here, and from the looks of it it was a really big one. Neither Sasuke or Naruto seemed to have held anything back.
Kakashi pulled Naruto onto his back and the young boy laid motionless against his sensei's back.
"I don't think the mission was a success."
