When my eyes opened, I immediately squeezed them shut. The brightness of the room made them burn and it only amplified the aching pain that wrapped around my skull.
"Sensei! You're awake!"
I peaked one eye open enough to see a blurred head of white hair. "Jin?"
"I knew you weren't okay! You shouldn't have lied like that! You almost died!"
"Can you keep your voice down?" I spoke, my voice sounding hoarse and raspy. "My head is killing me."
The room went silent until I was finally able to fully open my eyes and see clearly. Kamina was sitting on a chair to my right, his blindfold once again secured around his eyes, and behind him Amari leaned against the windowsill. To my left was Jin, and as I focused on his face I could see the water built up in the corners of his eyes.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean—" My sentence cut short as I tried to sit up and searing pain erupted through my abdomen. It was so shocking that it took the air right out of my lungs.
Jin gently pushed me back against my pillows. "I forgive you, but you're still recovering so don't try to move."
I wasn't going to argue. Every bone, muscle and organ in my body was either aching, burning or screaming in pain. I definitely learned my lesson and will never let my guard down around a tailed beast jinchuriki again.
"What happened after I collapsed?" I asked.
The three boys all looked between each other before Kamina spoke up. "We returned to the Sand Village right away. You were injured so badly that we couldn't wait for surgery."
"Surgery?"
Amari nodded. "While you were under observation we attended Lady Chiyo's funeral and the Kazekage returned to his position. Once you were stable enough to travel we returned home."
"What surgery did I—"
A knock at the door interrupted us. Jin excused himself from my side and opened the sliding door of my hospital room. From where I sat I couldn't see who it was, but Jin quickly flagged the other boys to follow him outside. Confused, I stared at the open door until a familiar head of silver hair rolled inside on a black and brown wheelchair. I couldn't help the smile that grew on my face.
"Well, seeing you in a wheelchair makes me feel slightly less embarrassed of my own injuries."
Kakashi scoffed and maneuvered himself as close to my bedside as he could. "At least I didn't need surgery, unlike someone I know."
"Guy needed surgery?" I questioned, but I couldn't help but laugh at myself.
"In all seriousness," I said, dropping the humour from my tone. "How are you feeling?"
Kakashi reached up and took my hand. His palm was warm and I loved the feeling of his rough callus against my soft skin. His touch always brought be comfort and made warmth spread throughout my body.
"I should be the one asking you that question," he answered.
I shrugged. "Could be better. I'm sore, but I don't really know how bad my injuries were to begin with, so it's hard to tell."
Almost like she heard me, Tsunade slid open the door and walked in. She stood at the end of my bed, her arms crossed over her chest and a deep frown on her face.
"Lady Third," I greeted with a nod.
She nodded in acknowledgment before speaking. "Jin told me you were awake and I came to explain the extent of your injuries. Do you mind, Kakashi?" She turned her attention to the man next to me.
