Leo's POV

(Y/n) and I were the last to enter the mess hall. Coach Hedge immediately marched up to my girlfriend. I thought she was in major trouble, but what he did surprised everyone in the room—he hugged her.

"Kane!" He said joyously. "That was the most fun I have ever had since I had to take care of these three bozos—" he pointed at me, Piper and Jason, "—on their last quest. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Let's do it again."

"Umm..." (Y/n) said warily. "Maybe next time, Coach." She sat down at her seat and I sat beside her.

Coach Hedge cheered at the fact that there would be a next time. Hooray. We're stuck with a pink mummy and a psycho satyr.

"Ready when you are, (y/n)," Piper said. I squeezed my girlfriend's hand reassuringly.

"Alright," she said. "So Egyptian gods exist... But they don't have demigod children. At least, none that we know of. Instead, their power is channeled by the ancient pharaohs and their families. That means even their descendants can channel their power. Each magician is descended from one ancient bloodline. There are only two known magicians who are descended from two bloodlines—my half-siblings, Carter and Sadie. Both my mom and my stepdad were magicians. That rarely happens. That means I'm also descended from the blood of the pharaohs, but only from one bloodline."

"Hold on," I said. "Sorry, Guppy. I'm just trying to follow. So your mom, also Carter and Sadie's mom, is a magician? And their dad, your stepdad, is also a magician?"

"Yup."

"Who's your dad then?" I asked. She looked at me exasperated.

"Poseidon," she said as-a-matter-of-factly.

"Oh... right."

"All descendants can practice magic," she continued, "but if they want to be more powerful, they have to undergo extra training and follow the path of the gods. They can channel the power of one god or goddess of their choice. They can specialize in divine words or combat magic, though all magicians can do a bit of both.

"However, training through the path of the gods was outlawed for a long time. It was only a few months ago that it became legal. That's because when you channel their power, they tend to umm... How do I say this? They want you to become their host, they want you to become their eye. It takes a lot of will power not to give in. That's dangerous because in Egyptian magic, there's this thing we call Ma'at—order, balance. If the gods keep close contact with mortals, it also draws in Chaos, with a capital C. It draws in the evil things, and the lord of Chaos himself, Apophis. He's a giant serpent who's goal is to devour the sun god, Ra. Don't worry, we've defeated that snake almost a year ago. We've managed to banish him so deep into the Duat, spirit world of the gods. He shouldn't be able to come back in at least a few millenia. The gods had to distance themselves as far as we've banished Apophis. Such is the rule of Ma'at. It's the only way to achieve order in the mortal world. Now that this evil mummy, Setne, is channeling Apophis' power, he's drawing him a bit closer, bringing the other gods closer as well."

We looked at her in astonishment.

"Almost a year ago?" Piper asked. "But wasn't the Titan war last year? Were they connected somehow?"
