4. I should probably explain first. This might get long but I'd appreciate it if you read this because it means a lot to me and who I am. My university (University of the Philippines) has this tradition that we don't wear togas during graduation. Instead, we wear our own white barong tagalog (for men) or filipiñana (for women). We usually have these outfits made ourselves, so the designs vary. The only thing the graduates have in common is this:

This is a sash, and we call it the sablay. Since UP is a school that strongly advocates for equality, democracy, and representation of the Filipinos, the sablay is hand-woven by indigenous tribes all over the Philippines. The designs may vary (because each province has their own unique culture), but the common thing it has is that it is inspired by indigenous designs from all over the country, and it has the letters of UP woven in the Filipino ancient script we call baybayin. You know how when a student graduates, they move the tassles on their graduation cap? Well for us, we have a special way of moving the sablay (see below).

So far, all other schools still stick with the toga, so wearing the sablay is a trademark of UP. Also, with UP being the country's leading institution (especially in research in all fields, whether it's in business, sciences, the arts, etc.) being able to wear the sablay is something a lot of Filipinos dream of. Hundreds of thousands of students apply every year to UP, but only a few thousand get in. Of those few thousand, a lot will not graduate on time (although they will  graduate). Some will transfer out of the university because of the pressure. Some might just drop out. Which is why to be able to wear the sablay is such a great honor. To be able to graduate and look at all the hardships that made me a better person is definitely a moment I want to be in. For every student in UP, we all dream of wearing the sablay someday and be able to help our country.

So right now, while graduation is still far away, I open my phone and see that, and I am reminded that I can and will get that sablay. I'm always one day closer to graduation, but right now, I've got to give it my all, para sa bayan at sa kababayan (for the country and fellow people).

5. HECK YES!!! I want to be a scientist specializing in molecular therapeutics and diagnostics. I hope that one day, medicine will be more efficient and personalized (and pharma companies can be more eco-friendly). Hopefully I can develop medicine using modern techniques, and develop new vaccines. Also, I want to be able to develop early diagnostic techniques, so we can take early action to prevent serious diseases. That's why I'm majoring in pharmaceutical sciences, and hopefully I'll be able to push through until I get my PhD.
