Josh POV

“Knock knock.”

It hurt to move my neck or face or...anything basically. So, I just called out a weak “come in” to whoever it was at the door.

“Hey, stranger”, Zayn came in, sporting a cast encasing his arm with some very authentic art on it.

“Hey there”, I responded, “I’m assuming that’s the work of Avery?”

His face turned red as he looked down at his cast with the words “I love you” and a caricature of him, Taj, and Avery on it. It was quite adorable to say the least.

“Yeah”, he laughed, “You know how much she loves art. So any excuse she has to display it, she takes it. Plus I figure it’s much better than the cliché act of having everyone sign it.”

“It’s much better. I’ll have to have her design a couple of things for me.”

Zayn looked at my neck brace and the splint around my right arm and leg. Nothing was broken as far as I knew, but I was definitely in a lot of pain.

“How are you feeling?” he asked after taking the empty seat beside my bed.

“Just how I look. I’ve only been out of the coma for about an hour and the nurses already have about 4 tests to run, and they’ve taken blood twice. I’m starting to think that I would’ve been better off dead.”

A very uncomfortable silence passed by.

“I know you meant that as a joke, Josh, but considering the circumstances, I’m gonna have to ask you to never say anything like that ever again in your life. Okay?”

Seeing how it affected him, I just nodded and focused my gaze on the ceiling to avoid the strain on my neck.

“So, who’s been by to visit?”

“Brendan”, I answered, “He was in the room when I woke up, and I made him go home to Del for a little bit. Louis walked in for about 15 seconds, asked me how I was doing, and walked back out. I don’t even need to explain how awkward that was. And…that’s about it.”

“No one else?”

“Reagan hasn’t come by, Zayn. I know that’s what you’re getting at.”

This boy had the subtlety of a tornado sometimes. He was my best friend, but he did get annoying.

“Sorry, Josh. But, I did come here for a reason.”

“And what is that?”

I was scared to know the answer.

“Avery thinks I’m still in my hospital bed asleep right now, but I came to see you.”

“I wonder why”, I rolled my eyes even though I knew he couldn’t see it.

“You know I came to talk to you about her, right?”

“Save it, Zayn. I know you don’t approve of us together. Are you really going to put someone that just came out of coma through this?”

“Stop your pity party”, it was his turn to roll his eyes, “But, you’re right. I don’t approve of you together. However, you don’t know the reason why.”

“And I don’t really care to find out. Zayn, you have no idea what this feels like so I don’t need your advice.”

He stood up and walked over closer to my bed. I glared at him as best as I could.

I don’t know what it feels like, Josh? You do realize that she chose him over me years ago, right?”

Crap. I had forgotten.
