JASMINE SAT AT THE HUFFLEPUFF table in the Great hall, with Hannah and Susan either side of her. Megan, Ernie and Justin sat opposite them.
Most people had begun eating, whilst Jasmine found herself not particularly hungry following Pansy's outburst on the train. In fact, she was quite embarrassed at the fact she didn't stick up for herself.
Jasmine played with the food on her plate with a fork, thinking back to the day she was sorted as new first years got settled at the Hufflepuff table.
"Jasmine Nott" Professor McGonagall called from the front of the Great Hall. Jasmine bit her bottom lip as her brother gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.
Jasmine walked up to the front timidly, sitting on the stool as McGonagall placed the sorting hat on top of her head. "Ahh, another Nott. You'd do very well in Slytherin house, that much is clear. But you're heart is kind, and loyal, and a lot less focused on self preservation." The sorting hat spoke, Jasmines hands were trembling. Already her sorting was taking a lot longer than those before her.
"You're a tricky one Jasmine, cunning and ambitious both leaning towards Slytherin, but you're also just, patient and very tolerant of those around you" It said again, Jasmine was terrified now, she hoped to be in Slytherin, but knew she may not be.
"Well, it better be HUFFLEPUFF" It shouted and Jasmine gasped. The Hufflepuff table cheered and she smiled, but she was so sad that she wasn't in the same house as her brother and her childhood friends.
Jasmine was brought out of her thoughts by Hannah telling a joke, the two girls sniggering as Dumbledore got the student body to quieten down. Jasmine was so focused on the headmaster that she didn't notice the grey eyes staring at her from the Slytherin table.
"Good evening children! Now we have two changes in staffing this year. We are pleased to welcome back Professor Grumbly Plank who will be taking over the care of magical creatures whilst professor Hagrid is on temporary leave." Dumbledore announced, causing whispers to start around the hall.
Everyone loved Hagrid, apart from Slytherins of course, so it was obvious that a lot of people would be worried as to where the giant was.
"Now our new defence against the dark arts teacher, Professor Delores Umbridge!" Dumbledore announced, causing everyone to look to the table of teachers where a lady who was dressed in all pink, a sickly sweet smile on her face, Jasmine could tell she was an odd woman already.
"My father mentioned she would be coming to Hogwarts this year" Jasmine whispered to Hannah who only shrugged in response.
"I'm sure you will join me in wishing the professor good luck" Dumbledore continued, and was about to continue onto another announcement.
