Chapter Twenty- Two: Heart Break

Theo's POV~

Dinner went well with Ruth, all we did was chat about one another's life. Then we discussed how my uncles funeral services will be paid and what will happen.

"I'm glad we could hang out tonight." Ruth sips her wine.

I had invited her inside our house since she was crying when we left the restaurant. She really did love my uncle for all the things he did for her.

"No problem. I'll be right back, I'm going to get a bottle opener for my Vodka." I chuckle. God only hopes she will leave soon.

I walk into my bedroom, Ruth getting her stuff packed together.

"Thank you Theo for inviting me inside. I have to get home now, Happy New Year." She brought her lips to mine.

Ruth kissed me, I didn't kiss back. Then she left. I turned around and saw my sister, Jessica starring at me with daggers in her eyes.

"You jerk." She hisses.

"Jess, I swear Ruth made a move on me! I didn't even kiss her back!" I defend myself.

"No Theo, you would have pushed her off like you've done before. Remember Shailene, your girlfriend?! What will you tell her?!" She shouts.

"I'm not telling her anything.." I sigh.

Jessica stares at me as if I had two heads.

"You son of a bitch. I can't even call you my own brother anymore." She growls.

"Nice Jess, nice way to speak to your brother." My heart begins to break.

"My brother would have never did a shitty thing like that." She slammed my door, breaking my heart again.

Shailene's POV~

I wake up in my bed, well Theo's bed but he's not here. I thought it was just a nightmare but it turns out that Ruth really did answer Theo's phone. It must have been something important that she stayed there.

"Good Morning, Good morning!" I sing to myself.

I open the curtains and let the sunlight shine through the bedroom. Today is the first day of the New Year and I'm going to spend it right.

"Hey Nahko?" I call up one of my closet friends.

"Shai! How have you been?" He asks.

I smile and say, "Really great actually. Anyways I was wondering, do you want to meet up and head to the farmers market together?"

"Yeah totally! See you in an hour." He says goodbye and I begin to get ready.

I put on a a white t-shirt and sweat pants. I'm just going out for a while, don't need to gussy up for that.

Then my phone begins to vibrate, I check and see Theo's sister, Jessica calling me.

"Hey Jess! Happy New Year!" I exclaim.

"Thanks Shai, has Theo called you?" She sounds worried.

"Uh no, I called last night but Ruth answered. I guess she was emotional or something, that's why she stayed?" I question.

"Oh yeah, well listen have fun today. Bye Shai!" She hangs up.

Weird, whatever. I shake it off and decided to call Theo.

"Shai, baby?" He husky voice answers.

"Hey handsome, how is everything going?" I smile, knowing he's alone.

"Okay, we all know my uncles time is coming. Therefore we are spending enough time with him as much as we can." He yawns.

"I'm sorry Theo, I wish I could be there with you. Anyways, Ruth answered your phone last night. Did she forward my message?" I ask.

"Oh um no she didn't. I was in the kitchen opening a drink. She was really upset when we went out to dinner. Shai, I have to tell you something." His voice sounds off.

"Alright?" My hands are sweaty.

"Ruth came over and she kissed me. I didn't kiss her back though." He says quickly.

My heart feels like it's been stabbed forty million times over and over again with a knife. Theo had been kissed by Ruth. On New Years Eve.

"Okay. Theo I have to go." I sniff.

"Shai, I'm sorry but I didn't push her off either. I should have but I needed to be honest with you." He sounds upset.

"Goodbye Theo." I hung up the phone. I didn't want to hear anymore.

Tears began to spill, as if I lost a part of me. I look down at the necklace Theo gave me. He didn't push Ruth away, what the fuck? Yet, he didn't kiss her back which is a plus.

But overall, Ruth shouldn't have been there. He should have told her good bye and left. Instead, he invited her in. It's going to take me a while to forgive Theo.

I mean, if I can even try to forgive him.
