Dear Journal, I'm Shai and I'm your typical, normal twenty-one year old. Today, I'm trying out for the role "Beatrice Prior" in the new upcoming movie series, "Divergent"; which is directed by Neil Burger. I've starred in previous movies and shows, but this movie feels different. I'm excited, knowing this will be a huge change in my life and I like taking risks. If a movie franchise is what I need then I'm going to do my best to get it. I'm Shailene Woodley and I'm going to change my life for the better.
The smell of my fresh herbal tea fills my kitchen, making me smile knowing this day is going to be full of new experiences. It was the day of auditions. Nerves settle inside my tummy, making me anxious about later. I'll be meeting Veronica Roth, the author of the Divergent Series and hopefully get the role for Tris Prior. A lot of incredible young women audition for this role and I can only hope that I'll be great enough to get it. A year ago I had tried for the role, "Katniss Everdeen". However, Jennifer Lawrence was a better fit and I'm happy for that.
My phone rings, my mother must be calling.
"Hi mom." I say, brushing my long, blonde hair to the side while packing my bag.
"Hello sweet heart! I know today is pretty important, but I want you to remember that acting is suppose to be a hobby. A hobby that you have loved since you were a child. It's suppose to be enjoyable so don't be upset if things don't go your way. Promise me that okay?" My mom explains, reminding me of our promise when I was a child starting my acting career.
"Of course, mama. Maybe after my audition and meetings with publicist, we could find time to get together or what not." I suggest.
"I would love that." She agrees and we say our goodbyes.
I've been reading this script for this movie for the last two months. It's April 30th 2013, the day has come and I feel confident. I pour my tea in my coffee cup, stir a little honey in it, and grab my keys.
I recieve a text from my good friend, Miles. He had tried out for the role, "Four", yet they believed Peter was a better role for him. In my opinipon, "Peter" fits him better anyways.
"Good luck Shai! You're going to do amazing!" -Miles.
I grin, starting my car and searching for the building that holds the auditions. Once I finally arrive, nerves begin to tingle and my hands start to twitch. I take a deep breath and tell myself I'll be just fine. Let my inner Tris take over and conquer my fear.
"Next!" Neil shouts, another girl heads in.
So many blondes sit around me, all pretty and seem to have a better chance than me. However, I never doubt myself in these kind of situations. I believe that if I think I can do it, then others can believe it too. It's important to love and believe in yourself, knowing that YOU are the only one who will be there for yourself in the end.
"Thank you, we will send you your answer tomorrow morning. Bring in Shailene Woodley please." I hear Neil from outside the room.
I breathe in, then breathe out and walk into the room with my head held high. Neil and Veronica are discussing the script and then their eyes lay on me.
"Hello, I'm Shailene. You must be Veronica, your books are absolutely astonishing!" I smile, shaking Veronica's hand.
"See, this lady is amazing. She's got talent and I'm telling you that she's the one we want." Neil grins, explaining his fondness to Veronica.
I glance down at the script one last time, the lines practically embedded in my mind.
"Whenever you're ready." Neil smiles and watches me carefully.
"Our society divided us into five factions; Abnegation, Candor, Eurdite, Amity, and Dauntless." I change the tone of my voice, imagining myself as Tris Prior. A regular sixteen year old girl who had no idea what was to come to the future.
I have read some of the parts of Divergent. Thus, I know some characteristics of my character. She was extremely selfless, although she believes that she is selfish compared to others. She had no idea that the faction she had chosen, would change her life forever. I keep that in mind while playing the part.
After a couple of more lines, Neil looks at Veronica.
"She's amazing Neil." Veronica gasps, both of them congratulating me.
"I mean, there's a lot of things I still need to work on and definitely need to get to know my character more." I breathe out, smiling at their expressions.
"You did awesome for the first time. Extremely talented, Woodley. You got the part." Neil states.
A crazy amount of joy washes over me and I go to hug them both. Success was what I thrive for and I got it.
