Marinette #1 ~ Do Nothing ~

It was a perfect day in Paris, which was almost odd. There were no akumas for Marinette to fight, no kittens for her to save or hospitals for her to visit. She had the day all to herself, and she decided to spend it with her best friend: Alya.

"It's been a long time since we did this, huh?" Alya asked while they were baking treats.

"Yeah," Marinette agreed. "When was the last time we had a sleepover like this? Right after we became friends?"

Alya blew some hair out of her eyes. "Wow, I think you might be right. We really need to get together more! Outside of school, anyway."

      "No kidding," Marinette laughed.

The two were quiet for a few moments before Alya spoke up again.

"Hey, do you remember when you hated Adrien for putting that gum on your chair, when it was really Chloe? How the tables have turned," she laughed.

"Yeah," Marinette sighed, putting her chin on her fist. "Poor Adrien. Chloe really was mean back then, wasn't she?"

Alya whistled. "She was. But you've changed her girl! You know what I always say, after all!"

"Bad things only happen if good people do nothing," the best friends said in unison, laughing.

The phrase brought up an image in Marinette's mind, but not the one she was expecting. It was of the new bully at school, just this time only a few knew she was a bully. Lila.

Marinette wondered every single time Lila lied why someone didn't notice, why someone didn't do something, but she herself, and Adrien, one of the best people she knew, were doing absolutely nothing. They were standing on the sidelines, letting an entire class full of people be duped and manipulated for the sake of one person's possible redemption! Looking back on it, that wasn't the best decision they had ever made, to say the least.

Hardening her will against anything that might stop her (fear of being hated or cast out, being kicked out of school again, even Adrien's dissaproval), Marinette decided it was time to do something. She had to be the good person who did things for the sake of those who couldn't do it for themselves. Those who didn't even know they should be doing something.

"Ah, yes, I know him personally!" Lila exclaimed at lunch the next day, loud enough to turn heads. "I met him in Hungary last January when I was visiting my uncle, one of the leaders there."

Marinette continued to chew her food for a few moments, constructing the sentence she would use to slowly shift Alya to her side. If she could have just one person believe her, her argument would be much more solid.

"Didn't Lila say yesterday that she was at the bottom of the ocean studying a new species of whale last January?" Marinette asked her cautiously, trying to sound casual.

"People can travel, Marinette," Alya rolled her eyes. She clearly still thought Marinette only disliked Lila because Lila liked Adrien, which wasn't true. Well, not all the way true, anyway.

"They can," Marinette shrugged. "Though I thought she said after that she went on a six week hike through the Amazon Rainforest, discovering sixteen new species of bugs on the way. That's pretty far from Hungary."

"Huh," Ayla set her fork down. "You're right, she did say that. Weird. Maybe she mixed up the dates. My brain would get clogged from all that traveling too."

Marinette sighed, but decided not to give up. Lila had slowly been making her lies more ridiculous and somehow still believable, so Marinette would have to expose the many cracks in her story slowly too. It would just take some time.
