After a long silence, it was Zaide who opened his mouth first. "It's my fault."
"What?" Thomas could not fathom why the boy would blame himself. "No, it's not."
"It is. I thought you weren't coming tonight, so I didn't lock the door." Zaide sobbed again. "And she's my sister, Thomas. No matter what she won't tell anyone, right? Of course not." He was trying to convince himself more than Thomas.
He was only fifteen. How could he be homeless and penniless? He did not have any job. More importantly, would his and Thomas' relationship survive after his parents came to know?
"Hey," Thomas made Zaide look at him, "Whatever happens, I'll always be by your side, yeah? I promise."
Thomas kissed Zaide's head as he hugged the smaller boy and held him close.
The thought was a scary one. Nothing would be more terrifying than losing Zaide when he had just got him.
Thomas just could not.
