Before Thomas could ring the bell or knock on the door, his mom opened it. It felt as if, with one look at Zaide's face, she understood everything and processed to hug him to death.
Zaide's body shook from the force of silent sob. "Oh, honey, shush! Everything's gonna be alright." His crying intensified.
Thomas was gobsmacked by what he was seeing. Who could thought his mom was so understanding? He might have told her years ago about his not-so-secret-crush on Zaide.
"Molly, they-" Zaide hiccuped.
"Tommy, don't just stand there. Bring him a glass of water." Molly scolded her son and then went back to comforting Zaide. "Hush, baby, don't cry. You're gonna be dehydrated."
Molly took the poor boy to the sofa. Thomas handed him the glass. Zaide clutched it in his hand. No matter what they did, Zaide kept crying.
Thomas pondered if it was for the best to let the boy cry to let out all the sorrows. It was hours before Zaide fell asleep on the sofa.
