CHAPTER 70: FOLLOW THE RAIN

The clouds covered the city, the rain began to fall.  Cold drops of water fall around, wetting everything in its path. 

All the people of the city get inside their home to not get wet, the city empties, except for the two of us, who follow any trail that could lead us to the lake. 

We've been walking for so long these last hours, that today has become eternal. I just hope Haru's ok.

I feel the rain falling on my face and my clothes, although the water is cold, it gives me a sensation of calm amid all this restlessness.

Legoshi: Dammit!..

Y/N: What's wrong?

Legoshi stops and sniffs deeper, he grunts and taps his foot on the ground frustrated and impatient.

Legoshi: The rain doesn't let me sniff well.

Y/N: ...Crap.

He looks at me worried and puts his hand on his chin to look around in anguish and despair.

Legoshi: In this way I can't smell the lake, I can't guide us there. There's just too much water everywhere!

I lower my ears in concern, and look around for some way to find it, any map, any direction, anything.

Y/N: Let me think of something.

I keep looking around. I feel the rain fall stronger, I hear the raindrops sound louder than before, filling puddles with water.  Some bigger than others... slowly flooding the streets... Wait.

I lift my ears abruptly and guide myself with the sound of the rain, I close my eyes and hear more drops of water hitting the ground and hitting small puddles. 

I must listen further.  I put my attention to the puddles, the sound of the water falling on them is different from when they hit the ground, it's a longer, deeper sound... it's colder, its splash is bigger.. I must focus on that. 

I don't realize Legoshi turned to me, watching me move my ears around listening to the rain.  Confused about what I'm doing, but getting an idea.

I listen to more and more puddles but among all of them, my ear catches the attention of something. 

Somewhere, there's a very large puddle, where I can not only hear the raindrops on it, but also the water running in it, as if it were a river.  Well, with the rain, the water keeps moving.  I can hear it.. I can hear the lake.

I open my eyes and turn to see Legoshi.  Who looks at me waiting for answers.

Y/N: Follow me.

Legoshi: Uh what?

Y/N: I know where the lake is, I can hear it.

I run towards the direction in which I hear it, I also listen to Legoshi's hurried steps splashing water in his path as he followed me. 

I keep running, going around the buildings and streets, running straight to the lake.

The sound takes us out of the city, taking us to a field where from a distance we can see a building covered by the rain mist.

Y/N: We're close!

The sound becomes louder and louder as we approach this building.  It doesn't take us long to finally get close to the lakefront building that runs in front of it. 

We stop for a few seconds to catch our breath.  I put my hands on my knees and look out at the lake.

Legoshi: Wow.. We're finally here.

Y/N: I can't believe it haha... phew!

Legoshi: Do you think this is THE lake?

It better be, either way we'd be doomed. Besides, Why would someone have a building away from the city?

We both get up well and look around, there's a bridge covered by a light mist, we must cross it. We walk towards it, but once close, the fog of the bridge disappears and we see something hanging from the entrance of the bridge.  We both look up.

My heart skipped a beat and I put my tail between my legs for a few seconds.

Y/N: ..... Yeah... This is the place.

There are... bodies of people hanging at the entrance.  It's easy to know this is a warning t-to not mess with them.  This people is SICK... This situation leaves me paralyzed for a few seconds that I don't notice Legoshi looking at me.

I'm nauseous and scared, their warning is pretty convincing but... we have to save Haru.

Y/N: C-come on, we don't have much time.

I walk slowly between the bridge entrance but something takes me by the arm and pulls me behind one of the trees that surrounds the place. I startle but I see it's just Legoshi.

Y/N: What are you-?

Legoshi: Shh.

He hides behind the tree too, leaving me between the tree and him. We're pretty close but none of us notice thanks to the adrenaline. He whispers to me.

Legoshi: Look.

He slightly points towards the building.  Where I see a couple of lions making guard.  If he hadn't stopped me, they would've seen me and... well, make me hang around with those people, making me another warning.

Y/N: Shit, what do we do now?

I see Legoshi looking towards the building, with an anguished and thoughtful face.  I turn to see the building, to see if I can think of something. 

Soon, I feel Legoshi's hands take me by the shoulders and put me behind the tree again, he looks at me with his scared but somehow determined eyes.

Legoshi: Stay here and don't follow me.

Y/N: ...What?

My ears lift and my heart skips a beat, I feel my stomach sink at hearing this.  I know where this is going.

Legoshi: Listen, I appreciate everything you did, I couldn't have done this without you... But this is dangerous, I'll take care of this by myself.

Y/N: No way!  I'll go with you.

I try to move away from the tree but Legoshi holds me by the arms without letting me move forward.

Legoshi: I don't want you to get hurt.

Y/N: And you think I do?

I release my arms from Legoshi's and look at him determined and sure I won't let him do this alone.

Y/N: If you go alone you'll die.  You need help, or we won't save Haru.

He looks at me anguished.  I nod to affirm I'll go with him and turn to see the bridge but before I can do anything..

Lion: STOP RIGHT THERE.

Both Legoshi and I turn to see a lion pointing a gun at us, he discovered us..
