Scary Thought
Trigger warning: Mentions of blood in the beginning
3rd Person POV:
1590's
Young, teenager-like [Y/N] sat on the floor, their belongings packed neatly beside them. They shuffled around uncomfortably as arguing could be heard from the room next door. They glanced at the door, worried about what could be happening. They then looked over their belongings, Japan's own belongings sitting right next to them. Japan had told them to pack up, but didn't explain why.
A crash could be heard from the room, followed by a scream. The young country freezes in place, scared of what happened. The door slams open, revealing Japan, katana in hand. He puts it away, walking towards [Y/N].
"Japan? What happened?" They stand up, looking at their brother worryingly.
"Grab your stuff, we are leaving." [Y/N] was confused and worried. They look past Japan and into the room, only to see their brother China on the floor, blood oozing out his back. They widen their eyes in fear, staring at their wounded brother.
"What about China? Shouldn't we help him? What happened?!" They turn to look at Japan, fear overtaking them. Instead of seeing their reassuring older brother, they were met with cold, menacing eyes. They begin to shake, terrified of what Japan had done.
"We are leaving. Now." With that, Japan grabs his things and heads towards the door, stopping and waiting for his sibling. With shakey hands, [Y/N] grabs their things and follows Japan. As Japan walks out, [Y/N] looks back at the room. China looks up and makes eye contact. [Y/N] tears up, ready to break down when seeing the pain and anguish in his eyes. He tries to stand up, only to fall down, landing in his small pool of blood. He reaches out for his sibling, but [Y/N] had already ran off, catching up to Japan.
"Where are we going." [Y/N] quietly whispers out, trying not to cry. They didn't know what to feel about their brother.
"Home."
Present Day
Reader's POV:
"[Y/N]? [Y/N]! [Country]!"
"Huh! Sorry? What?" I jump slightly, startled at the feeling of a hand on my shoulder. I look over, seeing Germany staring at me with a worried gaze. He relaxes upon seeing me respond but still talks in a concerned voice.
"I asked if you were ok. You looked dazed and weren't answering me." I look forward, noticing that I was sitting down at a dinner table. There were four cups on the table, two of which were in front of me and Germany.
That's right, Japan had invited us over for dinner. He should currently be in the kitchen finishing up the dish with Italy's help. I let out a shakey breath, before smiling sheepishly at Germany.
"Uh, yeah, yeah. I'm ok. Forgive me, I was just thinking..." Germany takes his hand away, still worried. We continue our conversation, him talking about how it is to live with Austria. I calm down, so does Germany as he slowly increases in volume, finally talking normally after awhile. I grab my cup and take a sip, relishing the flavor.
"So, how long have you and Japan been siblings?" I hum, placing down my cup. I shrug, uninterested in the topic.
"Ever since I can remember I guess. China found me after I had recently formed, so we grew up together. When Japan decided to leave him, I followed him. Even though I'm independent now, it's still nice to visit him every once in a while."
"Get ready! The food's done!" We look at the kitchen entrance, watching Japan and Italy walk in with food in hand. I stand up and help, gabbing some food and placing it on the table.
We eat happily, enjoying each other's company. I look at Japan, watching as he smiles at Italy's joke. I smile contently. Japan has changed a lot since we were under China's rule. He was scary at first, cold and uncaring for some time as he built his army. But soon enough, after karma had hit him and he lost a good amount of fights, he changed again. He went back to being quiet and closed off, treating me nicer than he had before. He allowed me to be independent from him without a fight, and was ready to help me in any way possible, it was nice. I wasn't with him when he became friends with Italy and Germany, but from the looks of it, they're a good influence for him.
But I can't help but frown. I think back to those dark times, how scary he was when we had left China. How we had left China. I sometimes still regret not having been there for him, but China doesn't seem to care at all when we talk, still treating me like his sibling. Japan never physically hurt me, but he was never really there for me either, too focused on power.
I look at Italy and Germany, who were happily talking with Japan about their next day out. I smile again and shake my head, mentally slapping myself. That was the past. The past can stay in the past. Right now, everything seems to be ok. We seem to be ok.
I hum quietly as I wash the dishes, Japan cleaning up the dinner table. Italy and Germany had left earlier.
"How was dinner?" I let out a yelp. Japan had appeared beside me as if out of thing air. I see him look up at me with an anticipating gaze.
"We've talked about this Japan, you don't need to impress me with your food. I always enjoy it." He drops his look, clearly disappointed at my answer. He joins me, helping me wash the rest of the dishes.
"How could I not. You have some of the best food, better than China and France's combined, in my opinion." I shake my head lovingly at his response. I let out a small 'thank you' as we continue to clean in silence. The silence was comfortable though, just like every silent moment with Japan. Once done, we head to the living room and turn on the T.V. The only noise that could be heard was the mumbling of the news.
"Do you ever think about the past," he begins. I look at him, confused about what he could be bringing up, "and wonder about how it could have all been different." He makes eye contact with me, his face neutral just like any other day. "I know I have not been the best brother, and I think about what I could have done better. How maybe, I should have left you with China. Perhaps if you had stayed with him, instead of following me, your country could have been so much more." My eyes soften, and I scoot over to sit by him.
"The past is in the past. We all wonder how our lives could have been different. But we should really be wondering about how our lives are now in the present. It's true, perhaps you could have done some things differently before. But right now, I think you're ok. You're a good brother right now, and right now is when it matters the most." He takes in my words, smiling and looking down towards the floor. I keep my space, making sure not to invade his bubble of privacy. He mutters out a small 'thank you' before speaking up again.
"I think you have grown up to be a great country, and a great person. I'm proud of you." I smile at him, and just like we have done so many times before, we sit in silence, enjoying one another's company.
