I pulled the blanket tighter around my shoulders as I sat on the steps. I watched as my mother was in hysterics talking to a police officer about whatever just had happened. I took a deep breath as I tried to look in the kitchen where most of the action was. After she had fallen to the floor and my mom completely lost it, I had ran to the phone and called the police.
I had talked to the officers about everything that happened but I had no idea how to explain what I saw. They would think I was crazy. My mom cried into her hands as a young women tried to get information out of her and I prayed they don't think she did this.
"Hi, I'm agent Ross and this is agent Marks." I looked up to see the two men from in the diner from earlier. I said nothing and stared down at the floor. He sighed and glanced at his friend with a concerned look he probably didn't expect me to see.
"We're with the FBI and we were wondering if we could talk to you?" The taller one continued softly. I opened my mouth to protest but closed it quickly. I sighed and nodded my head."Could we do this outside?" I asked them biting my lip and avoiding my eyes and kept my vision on the floor, "I could really use the air."
"Of course." Agent Marks said with a smile. I stood up and let my blanket slide of my shoulders and rest on the stairs as I made my way towards the door with the two agents behind me.We all sat outside at the table with an awkward silence over our heads.
"So miss...?" Marks asked me shooting me a look that was somewhat sarcastic and snarky that just made me feel...odd.
"Uh Leigh. Leigh winchester-Lawrence." I said staring at the table and running my hand through my hair. The looked at each other almost on cue as I said my last name.Great.
"So,could you tell us what happened?" Agent Ross asked, he was definitely the nicer one of the two. Just the way he looked seemed kinder. But both of them looked like they had seen lots of pain in their lives. Their eyes were so sad. I shook my head slightly and laughed softly.
"You wouldn't believe me." I sad giving them both a sad smile. How did I even explain it?
"Don't worry." Agent Ross said looking at his partner and then back at me. He pursed his lips. I ran my hand through my hair again, and looked up at the ceiling and scoffed. "I don't even believe myself." Marks let out a short breath and smiled as he looked at me."Try us."
Sighing, I leaned back in my chair and thought.
"Well," I started, "I had only been home for ten to fifteen minutes and I was up in my bedroom. My mom had Susan over for most of the time. I heard my mom scream and ran downstairs. Susan was standing there. Her eyes were all black. She took a step towards us and started coughing, as soon as she composed herself she took another step and started coughing again but... But this time it looked like she was stabbed there was so much blood but it just happened. Then this... Black smoke came out of her and soaked into the floor. Then she just collapsed." I bit my lip and shrugged my shoulders.Yet again the two agents gave each other another look as I shot them a quick glance of sarcastic confusion which neither of them noticed.
"Did anything strange happen before that?" Agent marks said as his look had changed from amused to serious. I racked my brain it was average enough I guess.
"Ye-" I cut my self off as I remembered the mailman "well... There was one thing. it was the... The mailman." I bit my lip and looked up at the as they both had a mix of confusion and weirded out on their face.
"The mailman?" Marks said raising an eyebrow at my remark.
"Yea, at first I didn't realize anything but he was here today," agent Ross was deeply into the story but agent agent mark looked around him with confusion.
"Wait now hold on," he started, causing agent Ross and I to turn our heads towards him. "The mailman? What's weird about the mailman?" Ross glanced around him and sighed."Well, the mailman doesn't deliver mail on Sunday's ever." Marks raised his eyebrows quickly after Ross said that, "so what about him?" He continued directing his attention towards me.
"He had come to our house three times and just kinda...I dunno, watched it."i sighed, tucking my hair behind my ear. But that wasn't the weirdest part, his eyes were black. Just like Susan's. at least, I think they were." I shrunk back into my seat as Ross asked me some more simple questions."Did she say anything to you?" Marks asked. Yes.
"No." I said as bravely as I could, but my voice cracked. Marks sighed.
"Now is that the truth?" He asked again raising his eyebrows. I bit my lip and shifted uncomfortably in my seat.
"No." I repeated starring at the table, "when she started bleeding she asked what I was doing to her. Like it was my fault."
They, yet again, glanced at each other."Did you smell anything odd?"
I had to think about this one. Anything smelling weird? Hmm.
"Actually I think so. Not super noticeable at first but when I was in the same room with Susan there was defiantly something." I said to both of them. "It smelt almost like..." I paused."Sulfur." they both said at the same time. I furrowed my eyebrows and nodded slowly.
They gave each other a weird look when agent Ross broke the awkward silence by standing up while agent marks followed him so they were both standing in front of me.
"Well thank you very much for your help," Ross said as he pulled a card out of his pocket and handed it to me. I took it as I nodded but didn't get up from my seat. The turned and took a step."Look," I stated causing them to turn around and look at me. "My mom didn't do anything. Please. Please help her not be guilty." I pleaded to them.
They glanced at each other as I stared into Ross's eyes. He nodded before giving me a sad smile.
"Thank you." I said with a slight smile. I watched as they turned and made there way back to their car and propped my head up with my hand on the table. What was going on?
