The dimly lit car was silent as I drove down the road.
"What about Clarke?" I asked keeping my eyes forward.
"He'll be fine. " Seth shrugged casually. I pursed my lips and scoffed.
"I mean. When are you going to tell him you left?" My words came out harsher then I meant but I didn't bother to admit that. He stared at me with a sad and almost pitying expression etched on his face.
"I'll give him a call later." He mumbled.
I let my shoulders and expression soften before sighing loudly. The sun was nowhere to be seen since it was early. The wind ran through the tree which caused them to sway harshly. It was the end of September. Which meant the air was getting colder and the leaves were preparing to die.
We were on our way to Washington. It would be a nice change of scenery from all the flat fields of the Midwest. This was just a simple ghost case which was easy. But now I had to worry about Seth.
"What gave me away?" I asked flatly. I glanced at him, the corners of my mouth turned up in a slight smile. He smiled back, his was larger and actually real compared to mine.
"Well," he started slowly. He looked up at the ceiling jokingly to show he was thinking. "When you dropped the keys, it woke me up."
"Well, I guess I really do suck at sneaking away." My smile grew and I couldn't help but laugh slightly.
"It's also a dead give away when you flash the car lights into my window."
"Wha-what?" I asked, snapping my head in his direction. My smile faded immediately.
"You flashed you're lights like eight times. That's why I came out." He answered giving me a questioning look.
"I never flashed the lights..."
"You did."
"You probably heard the keys and then we're still asleep and saw the lights. You were probably just dreaming." I rushed out.
"No Leigh. I know what I saw. I was awake and out of bed when they flashed."
Silence.
"So you didn't flash them?" He asked.
I shook my head slowly, not daring to take my eyes off the road.
The sun began to peak through the trees hours later. I hadn't slept in what? At least 24 hours. After our conversation about the car, neither of us had said another word. Seth had fallen asleep about a half an hour ago and I was planning on letting him rest.
The car wasn't broken. The lights don't just flash on there own. I didn't hit a button, I was already inside. The keys can't do that so it wasn't that.
But then what was it then?
My thoughts were interrupted when my phone began to buzz. I jumped and answered it as soon as I possibly could so I didn't wake up Seth.
He needed to rest.
"Where the hell is Seth?!" Clarke yelled into the phone.
"He woke up and came with me."
"What the hell Leigh! That's dangerous! Did you two decide to ransack my house as well? If you needed the blade you could've just asked."
"What?"
"One of my angel blades are missing and you could've asked me where it was instead of digging through everything and making a mess."
"I didn't take anything."
"You didn't?"
"No. And it wasn't a mess when I left."
"That means some son of -" static. "broke into my-" static." -ing house." He yelled and I heard a loud bang from the the other line.
"Look maybe it was Seth. I'll ask him when he wakes up."
There was silence and I almost thought he had hung up. He sighed.
"Ok. Just keep him safe. I know he'll do the same for you."
"Mmhmm"
Click.
There may be no way for me to keep anyone safe at this point.
