Half a year later, I received news that Arielle would be getting married to the Captain of Knights once again. However, I felt less disheartened upon hearing about second marriage this time. I can probably thank the puppy I picked up this time for that.
The puppy that I am referring to comes with two sets of eyes, silver hair, and a herbivore like subservient personality to match his puppy like spirit. The man Kyros Matin is not a human but a dog trapped in the body of a man. I made the shocking discovery about a month in since I first met him. No matter how poorly I spoke to him or teased him, he would always smile and compliment me as if I was his master.
I think it was his resilience that attracted me to him. He reminded me of Arielle in how she always faced adversity with a smile. They both had the competence to do what I could never achieve even if I were to die and be reincarnated over and over again. His resilience fascinated me as well as annoyed me at the same time because he was more like Arielle than I ever could be like. Despite all of that, I continued to pretend to be indifferent towards him as I thought that is what made me fascinating to him to keep his interest always on me.
Maybe it was out of concern that he would get conned by a bad woman, or maybe it was because I wanted a loyal servant of my own, I decided to take this man for my own with the only way I knew how to court someone.
"...I do not mind if you become mine," I said to him during one of our outings.
The level of properly relaying my own feelings to someone else was worse than that of a five year old child.
He gave me a baffled look and fell silent as he stared at me.
I could not blame him because I barely understood the cryptic message that I had just said even though I was the one who just said it.
After awhile, he nodded and said, "Understood," as if he knew what I was trying to portray in my message.
I barely understood what I meant...
Right after he said that, he took off from our date as if I had scared him away.
I felt incredibly dismayed as if I had done a great disservice to him.
It was as if my first attempt at courting him had failed miserably.
After awhile, I tried to protect my own ego by telling myself that I did not like him that much to begin with...
As if he could sense that I was trying to rid my thoughts of him, he entered my mind again even more so when a proposal had been sent to my home with his name on it.
We had yet to name each other as lovers, nor have we even held each other's hands, and now he suddenly sends me a marriage proposal?
This man is more daring and stupider than I first thought.
I saw him at my home the day after he sent a proposal to my home and decided to shake him by his collar in silence because I could not find the right words to say to him.
"...I...am...sorry," he said.
This person is always perceptive when it comes to me being angry with him and nothing else.
What a useless skill...
"For what reason do you always have to take extremes with me?" I asked.
He placed his hands over mine which were choking him by his collar.
"I have to act this daring if I want to continue being by your side," he said.
I quickly released his collar and took a few steps back.
As always, this man makes me flabbergasted.
"...There should at least be an order to everything," I said.
"Right," he said as he kneeled on the ground and held my hands. "I love you so much. Please marry me, Lady Charlotte Castile."
I accepted his sincere confession and proposal.
I later pondered my own thoughts and actions in my room alone.
I had accepted a proposal from a man I was not particularly in love with or did not think I held strong romantic feelings for. I did not feel that strongly for him, but felt that we could have an amicable relationship and ease our parents' worries if we were to get married with each other. Most marriages these days were like that. I suppose that it also helps that Kyros loves me.
If he continues affecting me with his feelings...maybe one day I can come to share a fraction of his feelings as well.
I ran my hands through a wedding dress catalogue until I heard a commotion in the garden.
"...Charlotte!"
I quickly ran out to hear where the cry had come from.
It was Eli covered in bruises and scratches. His clothes were in tatters and covered in mud as if he had ran through a deep forest.
"Eli? Where is Stella or your mother?" I asked as I picked him up.
"Stella is hurt," Eli said as he pointed at Stella who was now being carried towards my home.
Her injuries were far worse and her legs were severely damaged as if someone whipped her until she could barely walk.
"Lady...Charlotte?" Stella said as she reached her injured hand towards me.
"What happened, Stella?" I asked as I gently held her hand.
"...It was a coup...Former Captain of the Knights...Hoshu Aaron and the had formed a coalition with Nobles unsatisfied with Her Majesty's tax reforms and staged a rebellion against Her Majesty while half of the Knights went scouting towards the border. Please...please save her, Lady Charlotte!" Stella said before fainting.
"I will...I will save Arielle!" I said as I rushed out to gather my Knights who I had been carefully training for the day that the people will turn on their own Queen.
Even with the most righteous leader, there will always be someone unhappy with how things are being run. I should have expected this much from a country that denied Arielle the right to live.
I will probably continue trying to save Arielle until the day that I am no longer able to return to the past...
