The Other Line- Chapter 30

“Jai” he breathed.

Suddenly I felt my tainted heart lift into my throat, the rapid pounding unbearable and taunting. I shuddered as the cool winter breeze flooded the hallway. I could hear Jai’s breaths increasing in pace, the shivers and chattering of his teeth. How could he be here?

“Daniel” Jai responded

He promised that he’d stay away. He promised to stay with my parents and make life easier for them, he promised to protect our identities by never allowing our past to find us. We ran away for good reason, we couldn’t be the way we are still living in central New York. Daniel being here is already risking our cover.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” Jai growled

I stepped aside to let Daniel past before shutting the door behind him. I heard Jai breathe a sigh of relief as the warmth of the fire fought the freezing winter cold. He cupped his hands around his penis, either 1) to keep it warm 2) to hide his modesty from Daniel or 3) to hide his boner.

“There’s something that you both need to know” he looked back and forth between us with a worried expression covering his face “After you left, there were some altercations regarding your ‘death’” now I was terrified.

“What happened Daniel?” Jai growled making his way towards the couch and grabbing the brown fur throw that was draped over the back of it.

“Please tell me you’re not here to take us back” I wanted to shout but all that came out was a failed squeal.

“I would rather sit and tell you as there is a lot to go through” he nodded towards the couch which Jai was already edging towards, Daniel followed him and took a seat on the cream leather couch adjacent to the one which Jai had quickly perched on. I took a seat next to Jai, my hands rested in my lap, my head hung in fear.

“Talk” Jai ordered making no effort to hide his annoyance, he had the blanket cocooned around him as if it made him less exposed however the blanket was only big enough to cover his chest and modesty, and his hairy legs were still very exposed.

“When you left things got complicated” he began, taking a deep breath “After the news of your death had been delivered there was speculation surrounding how you died, it was all so complex that, your mom” he pointed to me “refused to believe that you were dead, she ordered a police search, a missing person’s warrant, she attempted to get a news broadcast but I had to intervene” he clasped his hands together and rested them on his knees and shut his eyes as if he were praying.

“So what happened?” I asked urging him to go on, not quite understanding his reason for this unexpected and completely unwelcomed visit.

“I got promoted” he told us pulling the badge from his pocket which read ‘Chief Command Officer Sahyounie’

“And this relates to us how?” I asked getting more agitated by the minute.

“Just let me go through this step by step, did Augustus Waters die without dying?” he cocked his head to the side and raised his brows as if his question was some kind of reference to something I should know.

“You’ve read The Fault in Our Stars?” Jai scoffs, clearly he’s heard of it.

“My point is, you can’t skip straight to the end of the story or else it makes less sense, you’ll wonder why and then I’ll have to back track, it’s best to explain step by step so if you’d both kindly shut the fuck up and let me speak” he growled through gritted teeth

Jai smiled at his response as if it was an outburst that pleased him. He sat back so that his back was leant against the leather, he waved his hand in commence before crossing his arms in front of his chest.
