It had been exactly six weeks since New York.
Every time Mason thought of the trip, he smiled when he thought about all the time he spent with Evie. To him, it made up for the time they spent apart at their separate universities, in New York there was no one else, no other distractions, not even Jodie could be a thorn in his side. New York for Mason was a glimpse of a life with Evie, making breakfast together, well Mason making breakfast for Evie, due to her being culinarily challenged, showers together, brushing their teeth together like Torrance and Cliff in Bring It On and going to bed with each other. Although at the beginning of the trip he'd wanted to kick Michel for dragging him there, but by the end of it, he was grateful that his best friend knew him better than he knew himself. He looked at the polaroid Libby had taken before their first date in New York and smiled before he got back to studying.
For the first four weeks after New York, Evie smiled fondly every time she looked at the polaroid of their first date. She recollected all those moments that they got to spend alone, being able to go their luxurious room, close the door and forget everyone else on the other side of the door. The stolen kisses at The Met, making sure to take a picture on the steps eating Yogurt as Ra-Ra told her to do, something to do with a Blair Waldorf, whoever that was. Strolling through Central Park, hand in hand, discussing the different types of architecture that could be found in New York, occasionally . She listened to each fact intently, mesmerised by the way Mason spoke so highly about something he's passionate about. It was one of the many things she simple adored about Mason. But after four weeks, Evie realised something.
It had been four weeks.
She hadn't had her period.
Then she started to think about all the sex they had had, more so, all the unprotected sex they had had, like in the shower. In her defence it was a spur of the moment thing, it didn't occur to either of them to grab a condom in the heat of the moment, with great emphasise on heat.
Oh shit, she panicked, if she was pregnant, how would she tell Mason?
How would he react to her having his child?
An actual human, who would tie them together by force, so she knew that Mason and Michel would be friends for life but that's different, there's an element of choice to that. She knew Mason wouldn't be a deadbeat dad, he'd stand by their child and more likely than not, by her side. But if she and Mason were somehow destined to be together or in each other's lives, she wanted it to be his choice, not his responsibility.
Rather than continue to panic, Evie decided to do the most rational thing that came to her mind. She knocked incessantly on Libby's door, holding back her tears, stop crying, she told herself, you don't know if you're pregnant, that's what we're going to establish she assured herself.
"Woah E! Where's the fire?" Libby swung open the door, bleary eyed, exhausted from late night revision sessions, to a tearful Evie.
"What's wrong Evie?" She hugged her friend, fearing that something awful might've happened.
"Do you have any pregnancy tests?" Evie sniffed, determined not to cry.
"Sure, I have some spare, why? And who?" Ushering her into her meticulous room, the only reason her room was so immaculate was due to their study being used as Libby's personal tailor room. That room was a mess, every material you could possibly think of was probably laying on the floor or in her inspiration book.
"I haven't had my period since New York Lib"
"Alright well, test first, panic later" handing Evie the test and giving her a reassuring smile.
"You're always so rational" Following her to the bathroom, Evie read the instructions carefully doing exactly as instructed. She let Libby into the bathroom as they sat hand in hand on the closed toilet seat.
