Sara Lahiffe was reading a book in the library.
It was usual for her to visit the library now and then, as she was classified as the nerd of their little group.
From other points of view, the girl looked content in her reading. but when look a little longer, you will observe that she hadn't turned a page of her book for quite some time.
A little sigh left her lips as she at last turned a page. bored, she looked at her wristwatch.
"Why haven't he arrived yet?" She mutters, occupying herself in her book again.
After a few minutes, she heard a creak of a chair being pulled on the stone floor and someone sitting on the seat in front of her.
"I hardly expected you to make it," she lays the book down and looked the brown-haired teenager.
"Pleased to hear you have such faith in me, Lahiffe." Flint sarcastically replies and looked at the girl with an inquiring gaze.
"Why do you need to meet me?" He asked, picking a book from the table.
"I need you to do me a favor," she looked hopefully at him, leaning on elbows on the table.
"You need my favor?" Flint Joseph was astonished at her request, "what kind of favor, may I ask?"
"I need you to teach me..." she picks a book laying on the table, "the sign language," she motioned him to take the book.
"Why do you need to learn it, anyway?" He takes the book from her hand, "and how are you so sure that I, of all people, know it?"
"You are friends with Humza, right?" "Yes, I am." He had a pretty good idea where this all was pointing to.
"He is mute, isn't he?"
"So, what?"
"I want to learn sign language so, that I'll be able to communicate with him." At last, the girl finally spilled the tea.
"Why are you so interested in him?" he gazed at her eyes, "is there an alternative motive I need to know?"
"No, there is no alternative motive, I assure you. I just want to be his friend and after what happened a week ago---"
"And what might tell, happened a week ago?" He cuts her off.
"He was beaten---"
"I know that," he wraps his arms around himself, stucking his chin up, "if you think that Humza is some charity case, Lahiffe, you are hopelessly wrong. He is not some lost kitten that you can adopt." He stood up, "he has friends, and I AM his friend."
"Look, you don't understand---"
"I understand clearly, I can see what you are doing."
"Fine then, Flint." She stood up, "I am not going to beg you, but I am going to give up either."
"Whatever," he moved to leave.
"Why weren't you there?" She asked.
He looked over his shoulder, she knew she had hit a nerve.
"You are his friend, right? As you claim to be. Why weren't you there when he was beaten by the bullies and left alone?" Flint narrowed his emerald gaze at her, daring her to speak.
When he didn't answer, Sara takes a step in his direction.
"Look, Flint, I know you don't want me to impose in his life and I understand. If our places were reversed, I will also do the same for my friends.
But you have known me for a year now." She tried to put Emma's famous baby doll eyes, that can work wonders, "ask yourself honestly, do you think I can hurt him physically?"
"Causing physical pain is not the only way to hurt someone," he said, shaking his head, "I know you mean well, I am not the one to make the last decision, it's up to Humza."
Sara felt giddy at her little victory, he says, "but it's a favor, when the time comes you have to return it," he gave her a half-smile.
"Of course, I know that."
"As for your classes, I will look into my schedule,"
"Sure," as he came, Flint was gone.
"Now, I can read."
So, how was your study session in the library," Emma asked, curiously.
"It was splendid,"
"What else did I except," Emma rolled her eyes, but asked nonetheless, "who was your study partner?"
"Flint," Sara replied.
"What?!"
"Hey, no need to yell,"
"Are you talking about Mister quintessence, teen model Flint Joseph?"
"Are there any other Flints I need to know about?" Sara raised a brow.
Emma ignored her question, "so, how did it go? Was he just as irksome as usual,"
"He is not that bad,"
"He is worst," Emma replied, but the tiny smile on her face said otherwise.
"How is Jaden? He is ignoring me in particular," Sara sighed.
"he has been distance lately," Sara pats her shoulder, "don't worry, I am sure he will come around."
"Are you sure that he likes Carolina?"
"I've known him since forever, I am sure."

(The next day)

Sara and Emma arrived at the library together the following day, As flint has texted her to meet him.
Sara was planning on going unattended, but Emma decided to tag along.
She spotted Flint at the far end of the library and he was not alone as she presumed.
He was accompanied by none other than the boy she was working hard to communicate with.
'What a fluke,' she thought.
Flint greets them with a smile, while Humza just nods his head acknowledging manner.
"Oh, look you brought a guest,"
"I can say the same about you," she motioned to the boy sitting next to him.
"Ladies, take the seat,"
"I am a very busy person and hardly have any time and I also contemplated hard on your plea, and I came to the conclusion that the only one that can solve the problem is the one who is a problem," he gestured towards Humza, who in return glared.
Even though Emma did not know what was going but she could not help but say, "must be hard,"
"What?" The three pairs of eyes were drawn to her.
"You and thinking don't get along very well, do you?" She was teasing him and Flint was stunned.
"Agreste Jr. I did not notice you were comical as well," he snickered, out of amusement.
The other inmates of the table were watching the interaction, one with amusement and the other with curiosity.
"Would guys stop flirting with each other, I've got a lot of work here?" Sara smiled.
The expressions on their faces after they heard her speak, were ecstatic, it almost made her laugh out loud.
"We were not flirting!" As expected, Emma was the first to protest.
"And the water is green," she immediately replied.
"Whatever," she strolled to the bookshelves.
She did not miss the way Humza nudged Flint's side playfully.
Flint cleared his throat and says, "as I was saying the best way you can learn the language is from Humza and I've already talked to him about it." He stood up abruptly, "now you two can start your class," he was gone.
"Probably after Emma," she mused.
Weird thing that love is.
But wait, how did we know it was love? Maybe a mere attraction. Not love, at least not yet.
