VIOLA WAS NOT HAPPY when she had to say goodbye to Dean and Seamus the next day and turn the corner leading to the dungeons. Snape had appointed her detention in his office, and now she was being forced to spend the next two hours organising the students' cupboards— without magic.

The Potions room was as gloomy and depressing as it always was when she arrived, and the greasy-haired professor sitting at his desk was not a good addition.

"You're two minutes late," he said. Clearly opening his mouth wasn't a good addition, either.

"Sorry, sir," Viola said, holding back a sarcastic remark. She walked over to the store cupboards and got to work; maybe she would be allowed to leave early if she got it finished quickly. Then again, this was Snape, so that was just wishful thinking and highly unlikely.

After about an hour of sorting out the spilled rat spleens and ginger, there was a knock at the door. Curious, Viola turned around and saw Karkaroff standing there, looking urgently at Snape.

"What is it, Karkaroff?" said Snape.

"I would like a word, Severus."

"Well, Igor, as you can see, I am supervising a detention. Your word will have to wait until later."

"I'm afraid it can't wait, Severus," said Karkaroff forcefully. "It is an important matter I wish to discuss, and—"

"Oh, very well," Snape snapped. "Jugson— keep cleaning, or it will be another detention next week." He followed Karkaroff out the door.

Viola stared at a container of Asphodel she was holding, listening hard. But the voices in the corridor outside weren't carrying into the Potions room, no matter how hard she strained her ears. Completely ignoring her mother's favourite saying about curiosity killing the cat, Viola stood up and crept across the room. She kept herself right against the wall, ear just by the small gap of the open door.

"— told you already, Igor, I know no more than you do!" Snape said.

"Forgive me, Severus, but I am having difficulty believing that. Were you not in contact with the Jugsons recently? I heard that Bartholomew has been—"

"Keep your voice down!" Snape hissed.

"You're avoiding the topic," Karkaroff accused. "You know what Fudge has been saying about the Jugsons recently. And you know exactly what they meant when they said—"

"Yes, yes, I know what they meant!" said Snape. "And I thought you would, too, Igor, but evidently that head of yours is filled with more dung than I previously thought."

"Do not try to deflect the conversation, Severus," seethed Karkaroff. "We both know the Jugsons know more than they're letting on. They can't say anything more in front of Fudge, and you know as well as I that they would know more than they're letting on."
