REGRET IS A BITTER feeling. It can clog up your mind and make you want nothing more than one wish, so that you can go back in time and change whatever decisions so that you wouldn't make that mistake again. That's exactly how Viola would say she was feeling the next morning when she looked down at her schedule and saw she had double Divination that afternoon.

Of course, she could only blame herself since she had chosen to keep up the subject, but it always felt better to pin the blame on someone else for your own stupid choices. She at least hoped she could get a seat by the window this year—there had been several occasions the previous year when she had almost fallen asleep during class due to the warmth and cosy chairs.

She took a sip of her pumpkin juice as the owls flew in overhead, not even bothering to look up—she wasn't foolish enough to think that anyone in her family would have sent her a letter. Viola looked at her watch and took a last bite of her toast before trodding off to her first class of the day: Herbology.

She took a spot beside Seamus and began a cheerful conversation, though when Sprout came and showed them what they would be working with, all of their cheer had vanished.

"Bubotubers," she announced, showing them plants that looked like large black slugs. "They need squeezing. You will collect the pus—"

"The what?" asked a disgusted Seamus.

The lesson went about as well as you'd expect. Viola was half-asleep and one of the bubotubers would have exploded everywhere had Dean not quickly noticed what she was doing wrong and helped her.

Their second class was Care of Magical Creatures, which went as well as Herbology. Hagrid introduced them to small, lobster-like creatures called Blast-Ended Skrewts.

"On'y just hatched," said Hagrid fondly, "so yeh'll be able ter raise 'em yerselves! Thought we'd make a bit of a project of it!"

"And why would we want to raise them?" Draco Malfoy had arrived, Crabbe and Goyle chucking beside him. "I mean, what do they do? What's the point of them?"

"What's the point of you?" Viola murmured under her breath. She was surprised when she heard Harry—who was beside her at the crate holding the Skrewts—snort. Perhaps she had said it a little louder than she thought.

Sure enough, when she turned around, Crabbe and Goyle, who were standing a few feet away, were glaring at her. But Viola didn't feel threatened, knowing that, between the two of them, they didn't have enough brains to tell one end of a Hippogriff from the other.
