You closed the door behind you and leaned back against it. Closing your eyes, you took a moment to try to catch your breath. The day had been difficult and exhausting and it felt like right now was the first time all day that you've had a moment to catch your breath and relax.
You opened your eyes and took off your shoes before shrugging off your sweater and taking a good look around. You realized then that the living area was empty, the only light coming from the sun that was now starting to set.
There was a tug at your heart as it began to sink in your chest. All you've been looking forward to from the moment you left was coming home to Nayeon. It was the only thing that got you through the day.
You know she had a few things to do today but it was supposed to be an easy day, allowing for her to come home earlier than usual.
But the house is quiet and the living room is empty and usually, if she's home earlier than you, she's right there on the sofa; waiting for you.
You checked the kitchen, only to find it empty, too. You took the stairs slowly, part of you dreading reaching the bedroom in fear that Nayeon wasn't home when you really needed her.
But, to your relief, before you even reached the doorway, you heard her laugh.
Your heart fluttered at the sound. Though it was hard to shake the sadness you've felt for most of the day so far, it's impossible not to feel happy when you hear her laugh. It's a sweet sound; like music to your ears.
You walked faster down the hall until you appeared in the doorway of your shared bedroom. At the sound of your feet on the floor, Nayeon looked your way. Her eyes lit up when she saw you standing there, but then she caught a glimpse of the sadness in your eyes, and her happiness faded.
She turned off the movie she was watching so she could focus on you.
"What's wrong?" She asked, swinging her legs over the bed to sit on the edge. She had her feet on the floor, ready to stand and make her way to you when you started to walk slowly to her.
"Nayeon?"
"Yeah, baby?" She spoke softly, feeling sad when she heard the sadness in your voice.
"I had a bad day." You whispered, taking a shaky breath and speaking just as she started to ask you what she could do. "I really need a hug. It's all I've been looking forward to all day."
She smiled a little and opened her arms. "You know I'm always happy to give you a hug. Come here, baby."
You walked to her and let out a breath of relief when she put her arms around you and pulled onto her lap. You put your arms around her neck and let your head fall onto her shoulder.
She rubbed your back, biting her lip as her heart sank deep in her chest when you let out a few shaky breaths.
"I'm right here." She whispered in your ear. "I'm sorry your day is bad but forget all about it now. You're home now and I'm here to hold you tight for as long as you need me to. I've got you."
You cracked a smile for the first time all day and moved your face to lay in the crook of her neck. "Don't let go." You whispered against her skin, relieved when she gave you a reassuring squeeze then buried her lips in your hair to kiss the crown of your head.
"I won't, baby." She promised. "I've got you. For as long as you need to be held, I'm happy to hold you just like this." She kissed your head a few times, heartbeat steady against your own. "I love you."
Your lashes tickled her skin as you left little butterfly kisses against her neck and said, "I love you too. Thank you for being here for me and for always making me feel better."
She smiled to herself, feeling butterflies in her chest before saying, "I'm here for you, baby... always."
