The loud slam of the bedroom door from across the hall nearly made Nayeon jump out of her skin.
She huffed and fell back onto the mattress in the spare room. She felt thankful that you'd both gone through so much to set all of the rooms up comfortably when you first moved in together only a few weeks ago. She knew she'd be cozy tonight in here while you both take a night apart to breathe... or, so she thought.
The sun was already set and practice had taken a lot out of her today and since there wasn't really much to do since she left her phone downstairs and didn't feel like going to grab it, she thought she'd just call it a night.
She turned off the light. The window was open only a crack, allowing her to hear the peaceful sound of the crickets chirping just outside. She let her cheek fall onto the pillow and she covered up with the cozy blanket. Nice and cozy, she let out a sigh and thought it would only be a matter of minutes till she drifted off to sleep.
But the ticking of the clock on the wall was torturous; every second that went by was more agonizing than the last. She wasn't comfortable enough to fall asleep, even though she was tired. The blanket was cozy, but it wasn't yours. It didn't keep her warm or bring her comfort the way yours does.
The mattress was like floating on a cloud. Comfortable and relaxing. But it felt much too spacious and unfamiliar. She felt cold without you in her arms or without being wrapped in yours.
She kicked away the blankets and brushed her fingers through her messy hair. She tried to squeeze her eyes shut and calm her racing brain. But it was no use.
Every time she closed her eyes, all she could think about was you. How sad you looked when she suggested you both sleep in separate rooms for the night, thinking it'd be good to catch your breath and clear your mind.
She kicked herself for saying that.
She sat up and buried her face in her hands. She felt cold and lonely and she wasn't sure she could take much more of this empty feeling.
She was about to leave the room and crawl back into bed. She'd apologize time and time again if it meant that she could hold onto you. That she could finally close her eyes and this sadness hanging over her would fade.
But before she could even swing her legs over the bed, she heard the doorknob moving. The door opened slowly, allowing for her to fall onto her back and lie still. She heard the door close a moment later and the same sadness washed over her once more.
She was about to rush out of bed without a second thought.
But then, the mattress dipped as you crawled into bed.
Thinking she was asleep, you tried to be careful so you wouldn't disturb her. You curled up behind her and you didn't even hesitate to lay your forehead against her back.
"You're here," she whispered happily. "I was just about to come lay with you."
She turned around, chuckling when she noticed your wide eyes. You didn't expect her to be awake, but as she laid her hand on your cheek gently you felt your worries fade away and felt yourself finally beginning to relax.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't, baby." She whispered and dropped her forehead onto yours. She took in a shaky breath and started to caress your arms with the tips of her fingers. "We're gonna have arguments. We live together now, things are gonna take some adjusting. But we'll work together, right? As a team? Like we always do..."
"We do make a pretty great team."
"We do." She agreed, chuckling happily. "I'm sorry for complaining about doing the dishes." She mumbled sadly and heard you chuckle and right away, her frown faded and her heart seemed to skip a beat as the once sinking feeling disappeared. "I'll do them tomorrow."
"I'll help!"
"Okay." She giggled.
A moment of comfortable silence went by. She caressed your cheek delicately.
But you soon laid your hand over hers and then intertwined your fingers together and leaned in for a kiss.
"I'll sleep much better tonight. Not just because I know things are alright again. but because you're here with me now. I couldn't sleep without you. It was torture."
She brought your hand to her lips and started to kiss across your knuckles lovingly.
"It reminds me of when you're away." You confessed with a sad whimper. "I don't like that feeling, especially when you're right across the hall from me. I couldn't take another minute away from you."
"I've got you now." She promised. "I won't let go. Try to sleep now."
You put your head on her chest and listened to the steady sound of her heartbeat. It didn't take long for you to fall asleep considering you were exhausted from the moment you crawled into bed with her; not to mention the comfort she was giving you by kissing your head and letting her thumbs brush mindlessly over your knuckles.
Your soft snores brought a smile to her face and cleared any lingering worries from her brain. She kissed your head one last time before letting her head fall onto yours. But your fingers stayed intertwined with yours, even as she drifted off to sleep.
She told you she wasn't letting you go, and she meant it.
