You stirred the straw around in your glass of water and took another good look around at the restaurant. You could feel eyes on you from other people who have been in that same place almost as long as you have.
The waitress returned to your side yet again, asking if you were absolutely certain you weren't ready to order yet. Because you have been waiting for over an hour now, sat in the booth all alone as you stared at the empty one across from you.
It was where Nayeon was supposed to be. Your dinner date is something you've been waiting for. You don't get many days like these and you can't remember the last time you've actually gone out for something.
Usually, you get takeout and curl up in bed with movies on. You don't mind those nights. As long as Nayeon is by your side, you don't care what you do. But when she offered to take you out on a date at the most romantic spot in town, you were so excited that you couldn't even try to hide it.
You got there a few minutes early. When a few minutes passed by, you didn't think much of it. But it's been over an hour and you're getting frustrated and worried.
You've called Nayeon a few times, only to get her voicemail. You've sent her a few texts but she hasn't answered you back.
You sighed and reached for your phone again. This time, you were calling Jihyo.
You listened to it ring a couple of times before she picked up.
"Hello? Jihyo?"
"Hey, y/n!" She said quite enthusiastically and it made you smile. "How are you?"
"Fine." You fibbed. "Is Nayeon okay?"
"Yeah, she's just working extra hard in practice. We've been taking breaks but she won't. She just keeps going."
"Oh. Could you have her call me when she gets a second? Tell her it's important."
"Of course!" Jihyo said before hanging up.
You stared at your phone for a few minutes, anxiously tapping your foot on the floor. Finally, Nayeon's name appeared on your phone screen. But she wasn't calling you. She was texting.
Nevertheless, it was a way to communicate with her and you were thankful for just that.
But her message made your heart sink a little. It was anything but understanding or happy.
It was... mean.
"You called Jihyo?! You know we're busy, y/n. You can't call and bother me when I'm practicing."
You scoffed and typed a quick reply.
"I wouldn't have had to call if you were here at the restaurant where we planned our date. I've been waiting for almost two hours! You didn't tell me you'd be late." You texted with a huff.
She texted back almost instantly.
"I. am. busy."
You know you can't technically judge a person's tone by a text. But you could tell she was upset.
"I have things to do. Meeting you at that restaurant is not at the top of my list of priorities right now. If you're so miserable waiting for me then go home. I'm not going to make it."
You felt your heart shatter. You tried so hard to hold back your tears. You didn't want to cry in public, especially not when people have been gazing at you with almost sad expressions as if they knew before you that you'd be stood up tonight.
You waved for the waitress and canceled the meal you thought about getting before you grabbed your things and walked out to your car.
You got home as quickly as possible and climbed the stairs to reach your bed. You buried your face into the pillow as Nayeon's words continued to run through your brain.
Every time, they made your heart hurt more. It was painful. She'd been so rude and you wouldn't be letting it go tonight.
You waited impatiently for her to arrive home. When she did, you sat at the foot of the bed and waited for her to make it up to your room.
Your jaw stayed clenched, your heart stayed broken.
"Oh," Nayeon spoke as she walked into the room, putting her hand on her racing heart as if you'd taken her by surprise by waiting for her. "You scared me."
She put her things on the floor and wiped the sweat from her forehead. She gazed at you, your silence striking her as odd.
"What's wrong?"
"No. Don't come in here and pretend like you don't know what you did."
She furrowed her eyebrows and you stared at her with hurt in your eyes.
"I can't believe you, Nayeon. I can't believe you stood me up on our date this evening. Not only did you stand me up, but I also can't believe you spoke to me the way you did. Those texts were mean. You were extremely rude."
"I'm sorry, I just,"
"No! I'm talking." You interrupted, making sure she understood just how hurt you were.
"You really hurt my feelings. I spent almost two hours waiting for you. Do you know how many looks I got from people? It's like they knew I'd be stood up before you even said it yourself. I looked pathetic, sat there on my own at that fancy and romantic place. I waited and I waited and I waited for you and you never even sent me a message saying you wouldn't be able to make it until I called Jihyo."
She sighed. She didn't want to admit it, but she knew you were right.
"And then you said those things to me and it hurt. I've been waiting for some quality time with you. You knew how much it meant to me. You were the one who offered to go out in the first place and then you just blew me off and broke my heart."
Once she saw those tears, she put her pride aside and rushed to you.
You fought with her, not wanting to be pulled into those warm and comforting arms of hers.
But you caved as she put them around you and gently pushed your head on your shoulder.
"I'm sorry. You're right. I screwed up. I knew I did and I didn't want to admit it. I had the worst day,
y/n. It was so bad. But no matter how bad it was, that's never an excuse to talk to you the way that I did. I am truly so sorry, baby. Please don't be upset. Please let me make it up to you."You sniffled and stayed silent as she spoke.
"We'll go back tomorrow."
"You'll blow me off again."
"No." She spoke softly as she gently lifted your head from her shoulder. Her eyes locked with yours and she stroked your cheek lovingly. "I will not. I'm never doing that ever again, I swear it to you. It never should've happened in the first place and I will never let that happen again."
You nodded slowly and closed your eyes as you melted into her touch.
"I know I let you down. I know my words really hurt you and I'm very sorry I took my frustration out on you. I know it was wrong and I feel awful about it."
"I know you do, Nayeon." You mumbled as you opened your eyes.
"I love you."
"I know. I love you too."
"I'll make it up to you. I'm taking tomorrow off."
"You'll get into trouble."
She shook her head with a small smile.
"I don't care. It's you and me tomorrow. I'm spending the day with you. I'll tell Jihyo, she'll cover for us."
You chuckled, knowing that she definitely would. Not just as the wodnerful leader she is, but because she's genuinely a really great friend, too.
"You're all I care about. Please forgive me."
"I forgive you." You said. "I love you. Please don't do that again, though."
"Never again, baby girl. I promise you."
You nodded and let her pull you into her arms once more. She gave you a sweet kiss on your head, swearing to herself that she'd never, ever mess up this terribly or break your heart like this ever again.
She loves you too much to ever let you down again.
