I shouldered my purple backpack and walked slowly down the stairs. I was leaving the Lost Cities, maybe for good. I was on a top secret mission for Team Valiant and the Black Swan. Keefe was still in a coma after Lady Gisela's "treatment," and we had to go to New York because of a new threat to every species. Huge beasts were rampaging Long Island and Manhattan. We were to attend Goode High School for the entire year, and also keep up with our Foxfire studies. I didn't want to leave Keefe. I told myself that this was for the good of our world, that Keefe would be okay, but I just couldn't believe it.
Alden's eyes were glassy as he sent us off for the second time. The first time had been when we ran off to live with the Black Swan. Keefe had ended up with the Neverseen then. That didn't bode well for our mission.
"Be safe." Edaline whispered in my ear as Alden talked to Fitz, Biana, and Linh. Tam stood in a corner, giving Wylie his surliest glare as Wylie calmly ignored him. Tiergan was murmuring to him with tears in his eyes. Even Marella's parents were there, as well as Maruca's. Timkin and Vika Heks were assuring their daughter that she was better than any puny human or monster. Juline and Kesler were hugging Dex, and everyone eventually came into a circle in one of Havenfield's many pastures.
"You all are incredibly brave to do this," Alden started. "and I just want you to know that you are all more powerful than anything you face can even imagine. Whatever happens, you will overcome it." I looked away to hide my tears. this was going to be hard, but we were stronger.
