The Sky is Ripped Open: Ch. 2: Percy's POV

I sprinted down the street, heading for the small, secluded beach where Annabeth and I had agreed to meet. It was Saturday, so I didn't have school to distract me from the task at hand. Monster attacks had been more frequent and everywhere lately. There was the drakon at Central Park, the Minotaur in Times Square, and the four airai at school. And not to mention the empousa chasing me!

"C'mon, Fang Face!" I yelled, taunting it with my sword as I ran. I reached a rocky stretch of coastline where Annabeth was standing with her arms crossed.

"Where-" she broke off when I grabbed her hand and yanked hed into the icy water. I took a deep breath as we plunged downward (yeah, I can breathe underwater. what are you looking at?) Then remembered that Annabeth couldn't breathe under water. I closed my eyes and thousands of bubbles swirled and flurried around us. They all merged to form a huge bubble of air around Annabeth, keeping her dry and able to breathe. As soon as she could breathe, she started lecturing. "You're late, Seaweed Brain." My girlfriend said.

"Well excuse me, Wise Girl, I was just a little busy being chased by an empousa!" I shot back. She rolled her eyes. "It's true!" I protested. "While you were off in California hanging out with your dad and eating ice cream, I was fighting monsters! Do you have any idea what this past month has been like? Day after day of monster attacks-" I ranted.

"Well excuse me, Perseus, but I have fought twice as many monsters as you have. I haven't even seen my dad. I had to go to Camp Jupiter because I was attacked so much that I couldn't even go to school. Even Camp Jupiter has been attacked by a giant. And do you think I got this from eating ice cream?" She shouted, holding up her arm, which was heavily bandaged.

"I'm sorry." I whispered, kicking us upward toward the surface. "I've just been attacked so many times this month, I haven't even slept. I've had to stay awake and alert all the time. We need help." By then we were breaking the surface of the choppy ocean. Thunder boomed, despite the clear blue sky. And then a huge black rip appeared in the air.
