I bumped into Gabriel a few weeks ago at a spinal orthopedic conference hosted by our hospital group. I was in attendance to brush up my spinal anatomy and operating skills, especially for the days I'm on call.

Gabriel was a guest speaker, addressing spinal cord issues and speaking about a study he conducted with his colleague, which demonstrates the early reversal of spinal shock in patients with cervical spinal cord injuries.

Seeing him in his element was unsettling to say the least. How could someone with so much knowledge, poise and downright sex appeal, be as scary and intimidating?

He commanded the attention of our colleagues, and he wasn't overtly funny or entertaining, he simply had this presence about him, demanding respect.

Gabriel spotted me in the audience and his voice faltered for a moment, before he cleared it and continued like nothing happened.

During our recess, Gabriel made his way to me while I was speaking to one of my colleagues. He knew I wouldn't blow him off in front of our co-workers for the sake of saving face.

We spoke in their company, until each of them disappeared, seeing old acquaintances and friends they've worked or studied with over the years, leaving Gabriel ogling at me and me avoiding eye contact.

"How have you been?" He asks tentatively, looking at me with soft, regretful eyes.

"Well, no one has shoved me against a door or put a hole through said door in a while," I ruin the peace, "so I'm all good. Thanks."

"Ava, baby. I'm terribly sorry." He said softly, reaching for my hand which I pull away instantly. "I don't know what got into me. Seeing you with that Ellis guy... fuck I just... I was a jealous prick. I know I had no claim on you, but I could see the way you looked at him, and the way he looked at you.. you wanted him, the way I wanted... want you."

"Hmm," I scoffed unimpressed. "It doesn't change anything. I came with you, and I left with you. That should have been enough."

"It should have been. But I wanted more. I'll always want more, Ava."

"This isn't the place for this," I said, while smiling and waving at Mac in the distance.

"Then let me make it up to you. Please Ava, I'll do anything."

I must admit, it was quite gratifying seeing someone as proud and arrogant as Gabriel to be grovelling and begging.
