My heart hangs heavy as I light a cigarette outside the restaurant, walking away from Ava; it's probably one of the hardest things I have ever done.

I knew I'd mess it up eventually.

And then there would be more casualties.

So I'm nipping it in the bud.

Delaying the inevitable.

A cowardly, dick move, no doubt. But it had to be done.

My own, personal coup de grace.

Being back home isn't the distraction I was hoping it would be. I needed to do some work on the farmhouse I bought. It's old and dilapidated, but it has so much potential. So I finally got the architects, interior designers and landscapers over, approved plans and got started.

Problem was, they all worked for a few days and then fucked off for the holidays. Which means, I've ended up doing most of the ground work myself.

Refurbishing is quite cathartic. I spent the first two days with my trusty new friend: the sledgehammer. We tore down the old walls, doorways and lousy built in furniture that smelt of old blankets and cats.

Everyday has the same routine:
06:00
Wake up. Ignore my aching morning wood. Stretch. I'm sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor. It's pointless moving furniture in because there's fucking dust everywhere. So, when I wake up, my body is as sore and stiff as the wooden floor I'm sleeping on.

06:30
Go for a run. Try not to think of Ava.

07:30
Cold shower after my run. Fuck, I really need to get the geyser working. Try not to think of Ava.

08:00
Breakfast and planning which room I'm tackling for the day.

08:30
Woodwork, electrical, plumbing, paint... whichever one is needed. Thank goodness for Google and YouTube! Mind you the housewives of Pinterest are pretty handy, too.

12:30
Lunch. Usually a sarmie of some sort. Dad pops by with treats from Sandy. Then he sticks around and we do the manly bonding over some or other electrical job, knocking stuff down, painting... fine, sometimes we just roll a joint and blaze away in what would be the kitchen. Dad heads out around 4pm, leaving some food for dinner, after I turn down the offer to join him and Sandy.
