"Listen up people. Vaxon will be here any moment now," Al called out to the group of people that were surrounding the bonfire pit.
"I thought we were supposed to have one more day to prepare," Anne said nervously. She brought her young sleeping son closer to her body. Her green eyes then fell to the ground as she forced her breathing into a set pattern.
"He was closer to catching Dave than we anticipated he would be," Al replied.
"Is the plan still going to work?" Kylie inquired. She crossed her arms and leaned against a tree as Carter who was standing next to her nodded.
"Everything is already set up so it should," Al answered.
"I can't believe we're doing this," Anne groaned then covered her face with her hands.
"I can. That monster tried to kill my mate and did kill my parents. We should've done something a long time ago," Dad said with a determined look in his green eyes.
"Don't get too cocky. There's a reason why Alpha didn't go off and kill him himself thousands of years ago," Dave reminded as he waved off Dad's courage.
"Exactly. No one goes for the kill unless Zylee is there. She's still the only one that can actually kill him," Carter added.
"Great everyone knows the plan and knows not to do anything stupid... I'm looking at you Jerry," I asked as I glanced over at him. He rolled his eyes and I continued, "Great. Is everyone ready to end this once and for all?"
Everyone's eyes went to the people around them. Slowly their eyes lifted from their fellow man who had been affected by Vaxon's wrongdoings and actually lived to tell the tale. They all nodded, some more confidently than others. "Then see you on the other side of this," Al told them all with a slight smile on his lips.
People started to get up left and right and go to the positions that they had been assigned. Once the noise was gone from the pack Al and I noticed two figures who were still sitting on the log benches.
The woman who had never spoken before she was so heavily involved in this scheme of ours. On the log bench, she sat frozen in place. Her gaze was fixated on the forest and her grip was on her son, Ben. Her white knuckles showed her reluctance to put her son into any situation that would involve his biological father.
Al and I gave each other a look of empathy on behalf of the traumatized woman and began to walk towards her. As we got closer we could see that her short brown hair was knotted, showing proof of her relentless stress that had been happening as of late.
"You know that I would never place you or Ben in a situation that I thought would get you harmed... right?" Al asked as he squatted so she could look into his eyes. Her eyes snapped to Al and she nodded timidly.
I sat down beside her and slowly loosened her grip on her sleeping son. The boy looked exactly like his mother. It would be impossible to tell who his father was even if he was standing right next to Vaxon.
"Please don't. I just want to hold my baby. He's safer in my arms," Anne pleaded with me her eyes getting a hint of red to them as she neared tears.
I returned my hand to its usual state then told her, "I know he is, but right now his mother needs to get him to their positions, and she can't do that with a cramped hand."
She took in a shaky breath then admitted, "I never thought I'd have to face Vaxon again. He ruined my life but also gave me my greatest blessing. I guess I'm just trying to say that I don't want Ben to have his life ruined by Vaxon too."
"That's why we're doing this. So Ben can have a normal safe life," Al reassured the crumbling woman.
Anne nodded and her clenched hand loosened on her son's jacket. She leaned down and whispered into his ear, "I love you Benny boy." She then kissed his forehead and moved his unconscious body to where she was holding him as she stood up. The young boy stirred a bit at the movement but ultimately stayed sound asleep.
"Promise me that both of us are going to make it out of this," Anne begged my mate and me.
"When this is all over maybe you can bring Ben by and help Al and I pick out baby names," I suggested letting that unsaid promise ring through.
She smiled and nodded. "I would like that very much," She replied. With that being said she turned around and left in the direction that I knew their position to be in.
Al came to my side and like a magnet, I immediately pushed my body into his warm one so that we were touching. The delightful tingles from the mate bond gave me a peaceful feel even though we were about to knock on death's door.
"It'll all be over soon," Al reminded me.
"Yeah... but for who?" I questioned as my mind went back to all the damage that Vaxon had caused.
"This is a good plan. It'll work," My mate comforted me.
"Dave said that Vaxon had gotten a few fans. What if he brings them? The plan won't work if he has decent backup," I told him as I looked into his golden-brown eyes.
"Vaxon won't allow that. He's too prideful. He's been wanting to kill me even longer than I've wanted to kill him. He'll come alone simply to prove that he can," Al informed me.
I let out a sigh and faced him as I said, "I don't exactly love hearing about how someone I was literally fated to kill wants to kill someone I'm fated to love."
"I am sorry that this mess fell to you. If I had just killed him after his first wrongdoing like I was supposed to all those years ago we wouldn't be in this predicament," He confessed with sorrow.
"Why didn't you?" I asked.
Al shook his head and replied, "Vaxon's first misdemeanors were taking extra food, the punishment didn't seem to fit the crime. Even to just an ordinary wolf."
"You showed mercy. There's nothing with that," I reassured him.
"Well, there is when it eventually leads to what he has become. I broke the rules for him and now all he does is break rules," Al grumbled angrily as he reminisced what he viewed as past mistakes.
"We can't change what happened," I said gaining his full attention once again, "But we can change things now."
As soon as I had finished my sentence we got a mind link from Dave.
'He's here. Right where we wanted him to come.'
'We're on our way. Just try to not get killed,' Al replied.
Al looked at me with his golden eyes burning into my soul. His hand cupped my face firmly as he stared at me. "I love you," Al told me abruptly.
"I love you too," I replied without hesitation. With those words, our lips met for possibly the last time. Quick but passionate our lips moved until we knew we had to leave.
"Let's finish this. Once and for all," He said.
