"Want to explain to me why that wolf said he hated you?" Al asked me as he leaned against the wall by my dresser. I rolled my eyes as I continued shoving my belongings into a large suitcase.
"Want to explain to me how you have people depending on you?" I asked changing the source of the subject.
Al let out a huff then answered, "Vaxon has displaced quite a few people. I have them under my protection. Now it's your turn."
I shoved the final clothing from the drawer into the suitcase and looked at him. "I'm stronger than I should be," I told him.
"How so?" He asked raising his eyebrow.
"Like... can beat up the beta no problem," I answered.
He smiled happily at my response then added, "Well in your defense, that beta needs a good beating."
I let out a laugh and he smiled at the sound. He cupped my face with his large hand making warmth spread from his hands in a pleasant manner.
"Now that's what I like to see," he whispered as he stared at me in awe.
'We're all ready to go' aunt Hayley mind-linked me.
I blinked a few times to regain my senses and stepped away from Al making his hand drop.
'Okay, I just finished too' I told her.
'Great! We'll be there in a few minutes' she mind-linked then the line went silent.
"My aunt and uncle are on their way here," I told Al. He nodded then walked over to my bed. He just stared at the bed, not making any move to touch it.
"Hey, are you okay?" I asked him. He ignored me so I walked over to him and placed my hand on his shoulder.
He looked at my hand after feeling the tingles from the mate bond then looked up at me. "Sorry, I got lost in my head," he apologized to me.
"It's okay. Wanna talk about it?" I asked.
"Oh, it wasn't anything big. I was just thinking about the first time I ever slept in a bed," he told me.
"When was that?" I asked intrigued.
"About three hundred years ago," he answered.
"Beds have been around for much longer than that," I commented surprised by his answer.
He shrugged then commented, "I was a wolf before I was a human. Sleeping the way humans did seemed very wrong to me for a very long time," he responded.
"Oh yeah. Werewolves used to be regular wolves," I thought out loud.
He nodded his head saying, "It was a simpler time."
"Do you ever miss being just a wolf?" I asked him.
He looked at my hand which was still on his shoulder and he had a soft breathtaking smile appear on his face. "No. Being a werewolf is something that I would never change," he answered. I smiled at his words and gave his shoulder a light squeeze.
"We're here!" Jerry yelled out stepping into my cabin without knocking first. I took my hand off of Al's shoulder making him frown.
"Are we interrupting something?" Hayley asked us. Her bright blue-green eyes filled with guilt and soon the corners of her mouth were going downwards making me feel sad.
"No! Of course not! You guys are fine," I reassured them feeling guilty at my sweet aunt's discernment.
"Okay the journey is about five days, and that's without luggage so we better hurry up and start running," Al told us standing up tall.
"Actually, we thought we could just take our car," Jerry informed us.
"What? Why?" Al asked seeming almost disgusted by the thought of traveling by vehicle.
"Well Jerry is a human, so he can't keep up with our wolves," Hayley answered my mate.
Al took a deep breath in then said, "Fine you two can go by car, Zylee and I will run."
"Actually I'd like to go in the car too," I told him. Al's head whipped towards in as he fought to keep the shock off his face.
"Why on Earth would you want to do that?" He asked me in disbelief.
"Well I won't get tired, and cars will be faster and safer in a long journey like this one," I argued. He looked upset at my reasoning but stayed silent.
"Is that your bag?" Jerry asked me pointing to my large suitcase on the floor.
I nodded and Hayley suggested, "We'll take it to the car."
With that they left, leaving Al and me alone for a few minutes.
"You could tell me where it is we're going. That way if you don't want to be in the car you don't have to," I told him."No way! I'm not leaving you alone in a car full of people I barely know," he replied.
I let out a laugh as I said, "They're my aunt and uncle."
"Doesn't mean I know them well," he argued.
"Oh geez! Don't be crazy," I told him as I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms over my chest.
"I'll just be in that metal can from hell with you," he grumbled.
"You guys ready to go?" Hayley called out to us from outside the house in the car.
"Yeah, we're on our way!" I yelled back.
"Last chance to change your mind," I told him.
He shook his head saying, "I'm not leaving you with people I am not fully acquainted with."
"Again they're my family," I snapped back at him.
"Again, that doesn't mean they're my family," he argued back.
"Whatever... just come on you overprotective grandpa," I grumbled as I started to walk out the door towards the large silver truck. I could sense Al behind me as I wordlessly opened the back truck door and got in. I immediately went all the way across the seat so Al could get into the truck the same way I did.
Al was stiff and examined the truck with both wariness and awe.
"Why are you acting so weird?" I asked him.
His gaze locked on me and I could see the uneasiness in his eyes. "I've never actually been in an automobile before," he admitted.
Uncle Jerry burst out laughing until Hayley smacked him lightly upside the head and gave him a disapproving look. Uncle Jerry stopped laughing as he rubbed his arm giving his wife a sad look.
"You've never been in a car before?" I asked him for clarification. He nodded his head and looked away, refusing to meet anyone's gaze
"Weren't you alive when they were invented?" I asked in shock.
"That doesn't mean I've ever wanted to be inside of one," he hissed.
'He'll want to be inside of us though'. I heard my wolf say in my mind. Jumping slightly from the unexpected voice in my head, I shoved the image that came to mind with the comment out of my mind. I do not need some horny wolf in my mind right now.
I felt tingles shoot up my hand and my eyes raced over to Al. Concern was displayed on his face as he looked at me.
"I'm okay. It was just my wolf again," I whispered to him. This calmed him down, but his hand stayed intertwined with mine.
"Well kids, I hope you're ready for a road trip!" Jerry exclaimed then turned on the radio to some horrible techno song with the volume on full blast.
Speakers blaring, I somehow managed to hear Al say, "I think I just discovered a new form of torture."
