Sub
I threw another piece of bread into the pond and watched the pigeons run at it and tear it apart. My sundae had melted in the radiant heat of Kelowna City; now Braden and I were left on a bench, in the middle of a park, bored as fuck.

"'Kay let's go." Braden said suddenly. He was already walking out the park before I could process our next move.

I ran after him. "Where exactly?" I asked.

"To that pet store. I could never remember the name but Alex is there. It's been almost an hour since he called and I haven't seen him." he replied.

I laughed nervously. Just the thought of Alex made me feel soft. I really need to get over myself.

I sighed and tried to stop thinking about. "Race you there?"

"Bet." Braden said before I could even finish. His expression then changed before speaking again. "Love beating you up?"

"It's not love..well it is a little..it's guilt, indecisiveness, restlessness..it's a feeling I can't get over y'know? Either way don't tell anyone about that." I said.

Braden motioned for me to start walking with him. "Breakups are fucking hard okay? Much more even getting to that decision. It's like riding a three legged horse but add the pacific ocean, the Sahara desert and the Himalayas."

That alone made me feel a little better.

"I guess what I'm trying to get to is that - you know Alex. You know what's been going on between you both. He would want you to be happy and you'd want the same for him." he continued.

"But you know what happened last time." I said.

"He feels bad for that. And either way that's in the past. If we kept dwelling on shit we did in the past, we wouldn't be where we are now." Braden froze the pavement in front of us to illustrate what he meant.

He had a point too. Back then Alex couldn't get himself under control and it wasn't really his fault - and he hasn't had an episode since last year I'm pretty sure. As for the second part, all of us have matured and overall gotten better since 2017. What we're doing now seemed impossible then.

"So what's your whole point here?" I asked.

"Do what is going to make you happy. You can't let this tear you apart, that's not the Sub I know. Alex will accept your decision because he wants you to be happy." Braden stated.

"I'm holding you to that." I said, laughing.

"Hey, I'm never wrong."

"This is the same guy who almost blew up an entire institution?"

"Almost never wrong."

By then we had made it to a hill which gave us a good view of the store. We stayed hidden behind the tall grass, checking for anyone who enters or leaves.

"I got the back, I'll get Alex. You go in and check for, and arrest the members." I said.

"Two things. You sure? And secondly can I do more than just arresting?" Braden protested.

I smirked. "Go wild. And yes I got this."

"Oh one other thing - gimme one of those earpieces so we could communicate like those spies on tv."

I put one in my right ear and gave the other to Braden. We nodded and split off.
