A knock on the door woke up Kol in the morning following the wedding. Still groggy, he opened his eyes and let out a sigh, wanting nothing more than to go back to his peaceful sleep.
Next to him, Nora was still sound asleep and didn't even stir when he curled a strand of hair around her ear and kissed her temple.
Getting out of the bed, he quickly found a pair of trousers and a shirt and put them on before walking to the door, yawning. No matter what time it was, it was definitely still too early.
Unexpectedly, Rebekah was the one standing awkwardly behind the door, wringing her hand. "Kol," she said when she realized he didn't intend to speak first, "I...I'm aware it is quite rude to bother you now, especially the day after your wedding but..."
"Wait," he sighed, casting back a disappointed glance at the bed before he closed the door lightly, being careful to not make any noise. "Let's talk outside."
To go to the garden, one had to go through the kitchen. It was a beautiful room with white and blue tiles on the walls and a white marble countertop. Several light wells and a huge opening in one of the walls ensured that the room was always bathed in light during the day.
Sitting lazily at a square light brown wooden table, Sage was drinking a steaming cup of tea.
"Finished playing doctor?" his sister-in-law teased him when they entered, waggling her eyebrows suggestively.
"...Remember the times when you couldn't bear to hear the most innocent innuendo?" Kol grumbled. "Your face used to turn bright red in a blink of an eye."
"I've been a vampire long enough to say fuck to social conventions, my dear brother-in-law."
Rebekah's expression became ugly after hearing this and her lips curled into a sneer. "How uncouth."
Unfortunately for Kol's peace of mind, Sage had never been one to lie low. Facing his sister, the red-haired vampire didn't hesitate one second to retaliate.
"Not everyone can be like you, Petty Bekie," she retorted in a mocking voice.
"Enough!" Kol snapped. "If you can't say one kind word to each other, don't speak at all. Now Rebekah, follow me. You are the one who wanted to talk."
Without making sure Rebekah was following, he swiftly headed to the garden. In spite of his beliefs, it was already late in the morning and the morning dew was shining under the sunlight, filling the air with rainbows. Such a beautiful sight, yet all he could think about was his bed. With Nora sleeping on the left side of the mattress, the right side must be so cold now. His poor bed...
He and Rebekah walked slowly, his sister slightly lifting her long dress to protect it from the wet grass and possible green stains. Once they reached the edge of the pond, Kol turned to her with a slight smile. "Alright, Bekah, what do you want to say?"
Rebekah took three steps to stand next to him, her eyes on the pond. "You look... happy Kol. You have never been like that before... with us."
Kol lifted a brow at her answer, an indescribable feeling of annoyance and pity rising inside him. Did he leave his bed just for this? Couldn't it wait for another two hours?
Gulping down the urge to tear off his hair and strangle his dear sister, he responded dryly, "This is what you wanted to say?"
"No, I..." She ran a hand through her long hair and sighed. Then she glanced at him. "Nora seemed like a nice person. How long have you been together?"
"Many years," he said vaguely with a shrug of his shoulders.
A dejected expression appeared on his sister's face. "I see... And you never introduce her to us? Is it..." she hesitated for a second before continuing, "because she doesn't want to meet us?"
