Finally, their math project presentation came. It took forever, but it came.
Evelyn flattened her skirt, standing outside the classroom. She took a breath, her eyes glancing out her surroundings and taking it in.
The blue lockers stood out against the grey walls, the silence filling the wall. She tapped her foot impatiently. Her eyes nervously checked her watch again, and again.
Luke was late.
She glanced at her phone, as if not believing what it said on her watch. It was pointless to switch devices, of course, seeing the time inch further and further from when they were supposed to present.
Finally, a sound of feet moving against the floor filled her ears as she looks up to see Luke jogging towards her.
She crossed her arms, "What took you so long?"
He wordlessly pulled out a little bracelet, handing it to her. She looked at him confused, glancing down at it and then back at him. It had a small, silver butterfly in the center, the band a dark blue.
"I just wanted to get you this gift from my locker. Now let's go."
Evelyn looked up at him, then back down at the bracelet. The blue framed her tiny wrist nicely as she clasped it on carefully, shaking her wrist a little.
Her heart warmed at the random thoughtfulness he showed. While she was never a materialistic person, and she most certainly was not now, it was clear that Luke's love language was through showering affection.
Ever since she had said yes to be his girlfriend, he never failed to surprise her. Flowers, chocolates, earrings, meaningful shirts, hoodies.
He always gave them to her randomly, casually.
"I love it," she smiled, kissing his cheek discreetly before pointing at her math class, "We are late though."
He nodded, "Let's blow them away."
And that's exactly what they did. They blew the whole class away, completely and utterly.
Evelyn and Luke were easily the top of their class. Easily. It was always a running joke that they would have to share valedictorian, because nobody could figure out who was smarter.
It was incredible. Any time one paused, the other quickly filled in, closing any gaps in their speech. It was a back and forth, full of tension. It almost was too much for a simple math presentation, but they really worked hard on it and wanted to show off.
Finally, after 5 minutes of engaged talk with no silence, they finally finished. Evelyn took a breath and looked over to Luke, the boy breathing heavily.
Her gaze drew over his body, landing on his mouth. Good job he mouthed as she smiled and looked down. It was clear their presentation was going to be the best of them all.
"That was...impressive," Mr. Hallberg, for once in his goddamn life, was sat up straight in his seat.
Never had he seen such intensely smart students in his life. And yet, by chance, here they were.
