Sometimes, life can be so cruel. You could be fallen in the mud, lungs full with despair, and life will take its large boot of disappointment and step on your back.
Things sometimes destroy you, and sometimes they make you stronger. It depends on how far you're willing to bounce back.
It is what it is.
Is that surprising? What is a surprise?
Is it good? Is it bad? What even are surprises?
Am I being dramatic?
Evelyn shook her head, prepping for her sparring match today. She suited up correctly, making sure each of her padding was in place.
She reached down, lacing her grip shoes to ensure that she does not trip on the mats.
That is something that could easily happen. Knowing Evelyn of course, with her klutzy ways.
Apparently, her coach had been keeping track of people's wins during the past sparring matches. The top two winners from the Round Robin would spar today.
And she was one of them.
She did not yet know who the other person was, but she had a few guesses, thinking off the top of her head of some people with excellent technique.
Evelyn, unfortunately, had absolutely no clue who it was. Her guess was not even close.
She stepped out onto the open area, the fake grass leading to the ring of mats.
Her helmet was tucked under her arm as she looked around, not able to see her competition. She was confused, attempting to find who is missing.
Evelyn's heart sunk, as her eyes began to flit quickly between the faces of her classmates, desperately hoping to find the face she didn't want to spar.
"Ah, there you are Luke. Ready?" Coach Tina called out, as Evelyn dreaded turning around.
Finally, she turned slowly, looking at the tall man walk towards her. He was walking with his helmet in his hand, his spear in the other.
She was going to spar Luke.
Evelyn tightened up her chest piece, turning to face her coach with a determined face.
There was no way she would lose. Not to him.
He stood in front of her, matching her foot positions as they squared off.
"Welcome to the final round of sparring among the experienced fencers. Here, I have the two who have won every game they play." Coach Tina turned to the other students.
"Because these two are unequivocally skilled, I am going to modify the rules of this fight."
Evelyn's head perked up, looking up to listen more carefully. This would be interesting.
"I am certain these two will get very close scores. So," She paused, "The first person to stay down on the ground loses."
Evelyn glanced over to Luke, seeing him look at her unsurely. Sure, Evelyn loves competitions, but she didn't know if she would be comfortable throwing the guy she likes on the ground.
I'm sure he would have no problem throwing me though.
She stared at him, forcing herself to find motivation for the fight. Evelyn thought back to Luke's conversation with Calum.
"I don't like her!"
She tensed her jaw, setting her posture to firm, straight.
"I have no feelings for the girl! I hate her."
