Dream's POV
"Dismissed!" Techno ordered from besides me. Wilbur, Tommy, and Tubbo all left the room. George and Sapnap were still next to me as Fundy, Karl, and Quackity also left the room. Only two main groups now scouted, for it had been months ever since the only sighting of Skeppy. We hadn't seen Darryl, Mega, or Skeppy since then.
Techno turned to me, raising his eyebrows, before turning away and walking out of the room himself. I let out a breath and I could see George and Sapnap visibly relax. It was only us three left in the room.
"So... what are doing today, Dream?" Sapnap asked. I shrugged awkwardly, leaning farther back. I hadn't really... had a good conversation with Sapnap since he woke up. It had been a month and a half yet I was too much of a wuss to talk to him.
Luckily, Antfrost and all the nurses had been able to figure out why Sapnap's memory was off. Unfortunately, it was way more serious than anyone had thought. He had lewy body dementia, the second most common type of dementia. He was only in stage 1, but the disease normally only allowed 5 to 8 more years of life. He was on medication and still could do everything, but we had been warned that his retirement from being a main guard would come sooner than we thought.
George and I were crushed. My childhood best friend, who was only 20 years old, diagnosed with something that was killing him slowly. Sapnap tried to look on the positive side. It was hard enough for us, I can't imagine what he was feeling. So we tried to ignore it, for Sapnap's sake.
The disease explained his memory loss, but also his sudden yelling and such. That part wasn't supposed to appear for a while, but the aggressiveness apparently came early.
"We could... take a walk. Like we used to." George suggested. I almost laughed, covering it up with a cough last minute.
"It's going to be hard when we are literally known throughout the whole kingdom." I said. George shook his head.
"Not if we take off our normal uniforms. Maybe throw on some cloaks and we will be able to walk around unnoticed!" George walked over to Sapnap, pulling off his headband. He looked up at me. "Which means your mask has to go."
I flinched, putting a hand up to my mask. Taking it off was hard now. 5 years ago I had a completely exposed face, now I can't imagine walking around without it.
"Come on, Dream, it'll be good to get your face some actual daylight!" Sapnap encouraged. He smiled. I sighed, grasping the strap that held my mask around my head. I pulled it over my head, my blonde hair immediately falling over my eyes. It was a bit long since I had never bothered to cut it.
George gave Sapnap his headband and started walking out. "Meet at the front in ten! Oh, and you two are now Nick and Clay, just for this walk." George continued out, leaving me and Sa- Nick alone. We glanced at each other.
Nick laughed a little, rubbing a hand on the back of his neck. "It's so weird seeing you without your mask, I hardly recognize you." He must've noticed the worried look on my face because he was quick to correct himself. "Not in that way, it's just that you never let us see the real you anymore."
"I guess... I'm really sorry for not being the friend I used to be. I don't know what happened to us, but I want to fix it." Nick's eyes brightened when I finished. He nodded his head vigorously, relieving me from the stress I had been dealing with for the past month. Maybe Techno was wrong, maybe we just needed to spend more time together.
"I do as well. But first, how about we go have some fun like old times?"
